Information regarding areas in Stoke-on-Trent with no drone flying restrictions

Hi,

As a new member of the club, I am looking for information regarding areas in Stoke-on-Trent with no drone flying restrictions.

I fly a sub-249g DJI drone with a camera. I have a Flyer ID, an Operator ID, and insurance through my club membership. I have found conflicting information online about local flying zones, so I wanted to check with this group for clarification.

I would be very grateful for any guidance or recommendations the club can provide.

Stoke is quite a large area, if you could let us know which specific area(s) in Stoke you’re seeking information for I’m sure someone here can help :slight_smile:

Hi and welcome - have you used the awesome Drone Scene web app from this club to look at the zones / area’s you want to fly in ?

Share the locations that your concerned about and someone can help you navigate the info as to what it means - a quick look shows a massive blue area that is about GPS jamming - basically take extra care when flying and a big yellow warning area to do with aircraft training so keep your eyes and ears open for aircraft in the area.

There is also a few really decent suggestions of locations from members on the map to go and fly at too.

The Rules

  • Follow the CAA’s Drone Code
  • Use Drone Scene
  • If it comes to it: Better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.

And don’t ask random councils, charities or utilities companies, etc. if it’s okay to fly!

Thank you so much everyone who replied to my query with very helpful tips specially the (Forgiveness Vs Permission) advice by @TheLittleRedJen :smile:

As mentioned earlier, I am new to the club and don’t have any experience of flying drones but very much interested to do it to capture some natural beauty that I would like to share through a YouTube channel I planned to launch soon.

There are 14-15 public parks (e.g. Victoria Park Longton, Fenton Park etc) in Stoke-on-Trent and an impressive network of canal. Also, Mow Cop castle, Trentham Estate, Park Hall road and few other places.

I will appreciate if you can help me with these places please

Thanks, will do that but sometimes there’s too much information to filter out the relevant ones. However, I’ll gradually learn to understand it and thank you all again for your helpful replies

Welcome fellow Stokie

There are very few restricted areas around Stoke, so it’s mainly down to TOAL permissions (as others have said) along with following CAA guidance and common sense. Flying during early or late hours can help avoid nuisance to general public as well as provide great lighting conditions.

The locations you mention would all be worth taking footage of, although I think you may encounter resistance at Trentham Estate. You could offer to do a quick roof inspection of one of the large houses next to Longton Park in exchange for take off permission. Also, a lot of marinas on the canals tend to be fine allowing permission, and there are loads of secluded spots along the towpaths.

Stay well away from red zones of don’t. Very polite armed police are known to appear and confiscated your toys. :wink:
