If I can hover a drone for, say, 20 mins, How long do you reckon I could fly at a steady 30mph in ideal weather conditions?
Most of the power expended is used to stay up at all. The additional amount to move at the same time is only a fraction … but that fraction will increase with greater speed.
I’ve seen tests (Mavic Pro) where someone’s hovered a battery from full to 10%, and then flown fast circles over the same battery usage. The results showed almost no difference.
Something I keep meaning to try myself, but never get around to it because it’s probably a waste of time.
Give it some króna it won’t know where its coming or going up down sideways, it will probably think its going 60mph when doing 30mph. HAHA
With my mavic air 2, it can hover for around 30 minutes. Iff I fly it at it’s max speed of 40+mph, constant, then I get around 20 minutes before I need to think about landing.
This is below 30ft in height so varying wind factors don’t come in to play much. Above 50ft and in most areas, you do tend to have some breeze.
Hmmm. So about 2/3rds.
Only asking as I have a new build and can only hover it at the moment because of lockdown.
Sounds exciting. I come from a fixed wing background and built many, own design aircraft. Wishing you a safe flight when you finally get to give her a Whirl properly.
I don’t think the wings on an Apache are there to provide lift but rather to hold the armament. They are wing shaped for stability to help combat the drag a full payload would create.

It’s an AH-56 Cheyenne, and the wings definitely did provide lift 
Another example would be the S-67 Blackhawk, which went as far as having control surfaces on its wings - seen below with them deployed as airbrakes.

My mistake. I broke my own rule by making unfounded assumptions.
I have acquainted myself with the facts about this aircraft only to find out it has a very interesting, albeit brief, history. Quite surprisingly is how effective the wings were in this compound design, meaning when the pusher prop was in use the main rotor only accounted for 20% of the overall lift.
IRotor Riot made a video of a pusher prop fitted to a race quad with some very surprising results.
