We spotted the whale when it blew in the fjord, Skötufjörður, whilst driving on the way to Isafjordur, right on the top north west of Iceland. The Westfjords of Iceland are incredible (if a little cold, but then I guess the clue is in the name). By the time we’d found somewhere to stop, (you cannot just stop on the road in Iceland, it’s illegal, despite there being next to no traffic in that part of the world) the whale had dived. So, I got the drone out and sent it off across the fjord. By the time the whale resurfaced it was about 2/3 mile away! Way, way, way, further than I have ever sent the drone out before, not to mention over water. By the time I was able to spot it and catch it up, it was just about to dive again. Lucky to get what I did, but I couldn’t hang around as I was nervously watching the drones battery level dropping, hoping it would make it back, which rather obviously, it did. Phew!
A bit further up the fjord is a coffee shop (http://litlibaer.is) completely in the middle of nowhere, as they tend to be. As we were sitting down to some well earned coffee and rather fabulous waffle, rhubarb jam and cream, looking out of the window, we saw another whale blow… Unfortunately the waffle and coffee won the day and we didn’t go rushing out … sorry.
