The Lady Lever Art Gallery was founded and built in Beaux-Arts style by the industrialist and philanthropist William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme and opened in 1922. It is named in memory of his wife Elizabeth Hulme (Lady Lever) who had died in 1913. The building was opened by Princess Beatrice, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria.
