Does it struggle with the vids or is a good buy for editing?

Its a really good buy, more of an investment for a good couple of years.

My 2014 handles 4k really well using FCPX, render times are 1:2 ish if I’m upscaling or downscaling.

I know there are windows equivalents for cheaper (some will say half the price) but for what you are getting I dont think you can beat them.

No having to upgrade this driver and that driver blah, and the beauty of using FCPX or even iMovie is that the software is written by the people who make the hardware so its going to work.

If you know any students/teachers or anyone with a .ac.uk email address then you can get 10% off at the Apple Store, this also works if you phone order and tell them you are buying for school age child.

I’ve been an Apple user for over 15 years and wouldn’t go back, I do use windows for work, but run virtual machines for that, again with no hassles.

Wait till the Apple stores open and go have a play see what you think.

I too had a VAIO, big old beast old £1500, 20 years ago.

If you’re bought into the Apple system then the MacBook is the way forward.

Not sure how the new Air will run FCPX, as I say book a genius slot when the apple stores open and take an SD card with some footage on, they’ll show you how capable the machine is.

They put so much crap on it

I have a £2000 MacBook Pro bought 5 years ago. Best 2k I ever spent.

It NEVER crashes ever. Always works to perfection and it gets used all day long every single day.

I realised when I bought it that all Microsoft is, is an exercise in jumping through hoops and fixing things. Windows product is the only products that comes brand new and is broken before it is unboxed.

The ‘genius’ guys at the shops are fairly non genius imo. They didn’t really have a clue to be honest. They were experts at taking payment though. Genius card machine operators lol.

A couple of months ago I was in this dilemma as to which portable device to go for, Mac v PC. I wanted a machine I could use for all my interests and unfortunately, even though very well spec’d, the Mac just wasn’t the sensible choice for me.

Instead I went with a Dell XPS 15 (8th Gen i7, Intel 650 and Nv GF 1050ti GPU’s, 16G mem, 4K touch screen, 512G SSD). It’s very slim and lightweight and excellent battery life. I’m very pleased at how it handles 4K footage in DaVinci Resolve and can crunch through large bandwidths of RF baseband data when I’m building SDR (Software Defined Radio) projects within Linux.

The not so good is there are only two physical USB ports, and the HDMI output only uses the Intel 650 GPU which would be an issue if using an external screen.

Again I’m not an anti-MAC’er, I bought my wife one for her Birthday and she loves the Apple environment, and I’m permanently bonded to my iPad as it’s my “daily do everything” tablet, leaving my Android Devices for handling the more techie things in conjunction with the PC.

How was it price wise @nidge? I think the gap is closing between a ‘quality’ windows machine and Apple equivalent now

Ordered a HP ENVY, 16gb RAM, Ryzen 7 and 512gb. Hope the get it tomorrow. Will test it straight away with a massive video clip in Openshot!! £900 sharp but should have been £1000

I can get it on 0%

Do it!

Say good buy to broken PC’s.

You’ll wonder how Microsoft gets away with abusing thier customers for so long - I think it is like digital Stockholm Syndrome - lol

I bought a Sony a vaio £1500 with blu ray when it come out what a peace of shit that was it took so long to boot up I have got the Apple bug iPhone pro iPad Pro so I never needed another laptop

I paid £1100 for it, Chris. I bought it through Amazon from a registered Dell Agent who specialises in very low mileage (2 weeks or less) corporate machines. It was supplied in the original box with all the paperwork, full supplier warranty and six years of Dell Cover. It’s just like a new machine, still had all the original protective plastic film wrap on.
