Lens flare using drone

Morning all
I was looking back at a couple of photos I shot last year in the bright sun,I noticed the flare or glare in the pics, can’t exactly remember how I achieved it neither can I remember if I was using a standard dji filter at the time which would be the lowest filter if I did that came with the fly more combo on a MA2,which is ND 16/64/256
If I was it would be the ND 16 but as said I can’t remember.however after watching some tutorials I see people using anamorphic lens, which by the way look fantastic in some of there videos but still being pretty new to the hobby my question is,is there a filter / filters route I can go down not to squeeze the image / de squeeze as that seems too technical for me right now.meaning lens or lenses I can get that give you a bit of a decent glare but without all the ( more pro editing ) which is above me right about now,If I’ve drawn a blank no worries thought I’d ask maybe there’s a good set of happy medium lenses out there just to make your videos look a little more creative for a quick post straight to social media or whatever,if I’m in the wrong place or this is not achievable that’s fine maybe I’ll have to learn the hard way.no harm in asking so I thought I’d reach out,if I’m out my depth on what is or what’s not possible for someone like myself in this area no offence taken if that’s the case.
Thanks

Can you post examples of the photos?

Excuse the c##p picture I can’t remember if I was trying the standard dji ND filters on that day, pictures nothing of interest just looking for ways to try add or find the right move to give pics & videos a little bit more character if that’s the word, still an early learner tbh so if the photography is a bit out my depth right now “ if I’m trying to learn to much at once “ then maybe I’ll have to put that to the back of my head for now and concentrate on other things within the drone & save that for another day.
Thankyou

Taking photos directly into the sun would be a challenge for an expensive lens on a camera. To be honest, you’d be better keeping the sun at an angle, instead of directly at the lens, which may help a little, but bear in mind that you will never get the optical quality from the lens on a small drone that you could expect with high quality camera optics. Also make sure that your lens and filters are clean. Even the slightest hint of greasy fingerprint will affect the image quality.

Thankyou for that do you know of a happy medium filter for a bright sunny day a usual go to maybe, any help would be appreciated, meaning the filter strength I think
Kind regards

For videography or photography?

should have been more specific sorry, being new to the videography completely & done a few shots with the camera so probally a bit of both if that’s achievable, not looking for a miracle just a bit of advice maybe, rather than watch a ton of videos on YT maybe some one with first hand experience rather than lots of different people with all different opinions …. Thankyou for replying

Frankly, filters for photography are not really any use, unless you want to try to blur motion by using an ND filter, but holding a drone still for a long exposure is obviously much more difficult than mounting a camera on a tripod. Polarisers are available, as are graduated filters, but altering the effect with the drone in the air is obviously impossible.

ND’s are chiefly used for videos, where to keep motion blur in moving subjects, the shutter speed should be double the frame rate, so if shooting at 30 fps, then the shutter speed ideally should be 1/60 second. With a variable aperture lens, that is relatively easy, but with drones with fixed aperture lenses, that can only be achieved by using ND filters to restrict the amount of light getting to the sensor.

Have a look through YouTube videos. I’m sure @ianinlondon has covered this in his.

Thanks for your time & effort to explain properly
Appreciated …

There’s many would burn you at the stake for even thinking that.

Although very true

I personally think lens flares actually add to the photo and give it a sense of of a dreamy sunset or sunrise.
But the bottom line is the more bits of glass you have then the more chance there’s going to be reflections and lens flares.
As for what kind of filter to use and where, then yes I agree with the statement above on still photography that most ND filters are only useful for slowing down and blurring water or movement where you can get a longer shutter speed during daylight to get more of a sense of movement. This could be a fast moving car or the glossy soft effect you get of moving water.

Obviously different for video as it lets you get the shutter speed down to around 1/50 sec for that movie like motion blur.
I did a fairly chunky video about filters and their use below

Photography has been my hobby for many years. I’ve used filters in the past for black and white photography, back in the days of film and since the advent of digital. I still use grads and polarisers on a camera, but grads on a drone, when the aircraft is airborne and you can’t adjust the graduation to maximise the effect and the composition is frankly a waste of time and I’ll stand by that comment.

Deffo, and with the advent of digital and especially RAW files, the use of them on B&W is pretty redundant too

Thanks Ian
Much appreciated….

After all your thoughts & advice which many thanks btw,I’ll just fly try to enjoy instead of trying to think to far ahead or try to achieve what’s not as easy for a drone or possible, but taking videos & pictures as & when.
Then maybe try to make them look as best as I can with an amateur edit after if needed !
Thanks again

@ianinlondon ive seen most of your vids which are great btw, don’t think I’ve seen this one which I will watch later.
Thanks

Just watched your video !
Very explanatory :clap:t2: Excellent & I didn’t know nearly all the things you underlined.I will watch it again when I get home as I’m sat in kfc car park :person_facepalming:t2::smile: I’ll probally watch it over a good few times until my brain has processed it properly,so I then know when I go out depending on the POI landscape weather or whatever a go to ND & settings to try and experiment & try to get creative & try to catch some nice footage :crossed_fingers:t2:
Once again thanks

BTW I’ve been subscribed to your channel for some time sorry I missed this !

Glad to help :+1:t2::+1:t2::+1:t2:

 This.
