Looking at buying the mini 3 i live within the 5k boundary of an airport (commercial)but also within a yellow circle what are peoples suggestions for flying. Thanks in advance
Hi @MB4K3R it looks as though you’re quite new here
Why not nip over to the Introductions page, and say hello properly and tell us a bit about yourself.
We will need more info, but generally follow the drone code
CAA | The Drone and Model Aircraft Code | CAP2320 | March 2024Page 17 of 43
Stay well away from airports, airfields,
spaceports and aircraft
If you endanger the safety of an aircraft,
you could go to prison for five years.
Most airports, airfields and spaceports have a flight restriction
zone (FRZ).
Never fly in this zone unless you have permission from the
airport, airfield or spaceport. The zone is in place to avoid
any collisions with aircraft or spacecraft at or near the site.
Some smaller airfields do not have an FRZ, but you still must
not fly on or near these airfields where you could pose a danger
to the safety of aircraft.
As above, you’ll need to get approval from the ATC before every flight @MB4K3R
Or travel outsize of the FRZ boundary, to a safer area, before flying.
For most practical purposes, you can’t fly your drone at or from your home. Not even a few feet above the ground in your own garden.
So, start looking for nice places to fly outside the CTZ.
I live within 1500 mtrs of Blackpool Airport & have several spots within the FRZ I fly regularly. I tend to block book (approval) several spots for a month at a time this allows for vagaries in the weather etc. Then when I’m at a spot I want to fly, I just need to phone ATC for final approval (often get height limitations as a couple of my spots are on regular flight paths, but not in direct line of runways). Then good to go (also have to activate flight online for duration) and remember to re contact ATC, de activate flight once finished. Also have a couple of flight spots just outside FRZ and put in a notification on Airportal as a courtesy.
Did you find the information above helpful
Did you mean an FRZ? Becuase you can legally fly in a CTZ that’s outside of the FRZ itself.
Yes it was thanks
@Seadog im in south shore also is it easy to fly around here obviously with airport authorised?
I usually pop down to prom and only fly midweek when it’s quieter, though with summer coming up I may give it a rest till Autumn. Just need to watch for overhead cables etc.
Do u always request to fly from airport or are there certain times you can get away with it
You always need to apply within the frz, atc usually shuts at 9 pm, however you can’t always take it for granted as they do regularly operate out of hours. Better to be safe than having the “men in blue” knocking on your door.
You can fly in Stanley park (not south of rose garden without clearance) or pretty much anywhere north of central pier (sub 250g drone).
No, never. It’s a FRZ
