Man 'in state of shock' after being hit by drone in Sidmouth

A visitor to Sidmouth said he was hit by a drone as he walked along the Esplanade, leaving him ‘grazed and in a state of shock’.

John Phillpott, 75, from Worcester, was in Sidmouth on Thursday (August 1) enjoying the pre-Folk Festival atmosphere. There were buskers playing music on the seafront and crowds of people milling about.

He said: "I was roughly opposite the hotels lining the seafront when suddenly I felt stabbing pains in my arm. I looked down and saw a drone had come to rest on the ground, its propellors spinning to a stop. It was blue and seemed to have some photographic apparatus attached. I looked at my arm, and there were several grazes, plus a bruise that was oozing some blood.

"I turned round and saw a young man with a hand-held drone operator. I remonstrated with him and he said ‘it’s perfectly legal, you know’. That’s when the exchange suddenly hotted up, with me telling him in no uncertain manner what I thought.

“I’ve been visiting Sidmouth every summer for about 15 years and nothing like this has ever happened before. The front was jam-packed with people - it beggars belief what some individuals think is acceptable behaviour.”

Drone operators are supposed to adhere to The Drone and Model Aircraft Code issued by the Civil Aviation Authority. The code clearly states that drones must not be flown within 50 metres of other people - unless they are with the operator - and should never be flown over people who are crowded together.

The code also states that any dangerous incidents or near misses must be reported to the Civil Aviation Authority, and Mr Phillpotts said he would be doing this.

He said: “I - or even worse, a child - might have been seriously hurt. These drones are potentially lethal and should be banned from public places, especially crowded ones.”

I’d want to see photographic evidence of these injury claims.

I’d like to see the blue drone with some photographic apparatus attached to it.

Well not sure how an operator managed to hit someone, presumably on landing (unless he was flying over busy un involved people location and lost control) and then aggressive to the guy he gave minor injuries to…

Yes the article is poop and anti drone, but from the little bit of info… Sounds like the drone op at fault here.

Agreed :pensive:

Alas, like all these “articles” in the media, we only ever hear one side of the story. As Bruce xjet says, it’s all about the narrative

For balance, I’d like to hear what the drone op had to say.

I’m surprised he didn’t bring his size 9 shoe down on the drone :wink:

I guess this emphasises the importance of ‘safe’ distance. I recently lost line of sight on a beach front. I was in an empty part of it but it had drifted. I managed to reacquire it visually and kept it at a height as it had travelled closer to a person at the waters edge with a dog. I hit ‘home’ and back it came.

Just takes a moment so I will stay vigilant. I have a policy of landing or increasing altitude should a person or persons walk into range. My preference is to land either to wait for the area to be clear or relocate to a more suitable location.

I read the article and an ad for “last will and testament writing” popped up at the end. Targetted advertising at its best.

… hmmn… 50m rule?

… blue drone… was it one of these 69gram drones?

man said the drones were lethal… hmmn

… not sure about able to cause death or destruction on the scale of Krakatoa…

think the man needs to get some perspective in life… at age 75 I thought he would have.

no it’s not acceptable what the done pilot did, an apology would have been the first thing to say, followed by an explanation and getting the guy some medical care and treatment…

yes stuff does happen… he who does nothing does nothing wrong…

I’d suggest a lot of those words were placed in his mouth by the “reporter” to try and make the article more clickable.

Hey, look at that. John’s found a way to get back in print…

(had a quick look at some archives. John really doesn’t seem to like those pesky young people and their socialising ways at all)

I’d now like to withdraw my earlier statement, m’lud.

Does it?

It sort of does, yes*

(*It’s important that the reader does not scroll down in the drone code lest they see the clear exception for drones under 250g  )

Had this off a neighbour last year. She said, you’re not allowed within 50m of people and within 150m of a building. I told her to scroll down and see what it said about sub 250gm drones. She did, but I never got an apology.
A few weeks later she asked me to review footage from my security cameras as someone (might) have been in her house. :astonished:
