Manston airport

I have noticed Drone Scene does not show any restrictions around Manston Airport in Kent. I feel sure it must have a FRZ. Please clarify if possible

David

Didn’t Manston close down years ago?

Yeah, confirmed, it shut back in 2014.

Drone Scene uses data from various sources including the CAA. It is kept up to date to the point that, if you enter details of a proposed flight to notify the CAA, it will update to show that.

Manston was an Airport but closed in 2014.

It seems that Drone Scene has had at least one update in the last ten years!

It has been used for the occasional aviation event (as well as a Brexit-inspired lorry park). The next time a planned event takes place the organisers will tell the CAA ahead of time, a NOTAM will be issued giving details and flight restrictions (if any) and those restrictions will appear on Drone Scene prior to and during the event.

We work hard to meet a ten year update window as a minimum standard

They still run helicopter flights at Manston, they have a Flying School there. I’ve flown a helicopter there. There must be some restrictions.

There isn’t if its not shown on DroneScene

Updates:

There are no airspace restrictions on the site of the old Mansion airport.

It’s not an airport anymore.

That’s interesting, how is the air space controlled there, helicopters taking off and landing regularly.
Just have to fly but be on the lookout for helicopters.

It’s not controlled.

Helicopters take off and land from hospitals and fields and motorways (accidents, etc) and hotels and all sorts of random places, the airspace over those isn’t controlled either.

Always. Anywhere and everywhere.

It’s why we have VLOS rules
