Mavic Air 2 Active tracking/obstacle avoidance thoughts

Hey all, just want to share my experience with the active tracking and obstacle avoidance on the MA2.

I tested a forest flight while on a walk with the dogs and to be honest the results where very impressive, I wouldn’t go to say that it was flawless, but yes impressive.

It avoided trees branches it lost sight of the subject for a second or so, and then moving around it found me back again. It changed altitude sideways until at one point could not do more. The video recorded, doesn’t make an interesting thing to watch, but, nevertheless, it is interesting to see how it handles situations.

My old MA1 did OK with object tracking as long as you didn’t have nothing blocking the view, not ever for a second. Also, it did not climb or lower the altitude if you weren’t on a flat surface.

Surely, this is not something you would rely completely, but the way that has avoided branches and resolved small “problems” has got me very impressed indeed.

The video is only 6 seconds - was it meant to be longer?

Hi Ian, I took a couple. That one and this second one are probably the ones that show a bit better how it worked. There was others, where I was messing around with the exposure and iso, and the video goes completely dark midway.

In all honestly, it does well.

Thanks. It is great feature.

I though so. The source code that must go inside this machines must be extremely long and complex.

Still, I would not solely rely on it, it has had a couple of “ups” moments all by himself.
If it would of been made of flesh, it would of gone bright red. :see_no_evil:

Nice test there Eneko. That is pretty impressive through the tree branches. Its a shame it can’t scan further ahead and predict a slightly smoother path so it doesn’t have to stop every now and then. But to see it flying itself through a woods is very cool :sunglasses: :+1:t2:

I agree. I guess, if it would of been lighter, would of helped also. Not the nicest day and time to fly as it was getting dark.

A little later, the sensors did not work properly, it seems to be very light dependant.

Yeah that makes sense I guess and some of these branches and leaves are small and difficult to detect even in good light conditions. Its a great feature to have though :+1:t2:

Very impressive. I don’t think I would have been that confident and brave to risk flying so close to hefty trees like that - especially with your back to the drone! It shows it can be done though! Thanks.

Too right Ian. Not the greatest idea, to be honest.
At a couple of times, you see it “very close” (or at least it appears so) to some very thing branches.

I am most impressed by this, and agree with the comment that I might not have been that brave… @ianinlondon played hide and seek with it in his trees, but this was a longer and more complex test and it seemed to have worked well. Thanks for posting.

Just don’t try turning around and walking back, Air2 will swing out to keep its distance from you. Did some testing in works yard and it makes a very big Arc and with no Obs on the side it will keep flying and hit anything to the side.

That was really good, that’s one of the main reasons I want the Air 2 :+1:t3: would be good for mountain biking and offroad

I tried following some little fishing boats and did a great job. But there was no obstacles at the see.
As long as you are on a clear area, if you have obstacles and the speed that you can get up to, it’ll eventually loose you.

would say I would test it with my motorbike, but 0 to 70 in 4.2 seconds might leave it standing lol

I’d try it with my Drz400, 0-70 never  would be handy to film my mates riding into ponds and ditches tho
