Max height limit removal

Hi all. New member here. David from Suffolk. I’ve been flying drones for the past five years. And am normally on the “other” forum". But there is a question I’ve been busting to ask. But knew I would be immediately shot down in flames by all the “You must not do that, it’s against the law” And realized that could happen here. I’ve never seen the question asked before. So here goes. Do your best, and worst… Is there a way to increase the maximum altitude from what I think is 1645 ft? ( yes I do know the rules. so please don’t tell me.
I dread to think of the answers I’m going to get.
David.

This search will probably provide what you’re looking for.

You should be safe, from our own rules:

This is a ‘No Drone-Police Zone (NDPZ)’

You are responsible for your own actions; nobody else.

Grey Arrows Drone Club committee are not the ‘drone police’.

Similarly, Grey Arrows Drone Club members are not the drone police either.

Do not police other members.

Go on then, I’ll bite…
Without judgement, but with curiosity: Why would you want to remove the height limit?

To my simple little mind, the maximum legally permitted height is 120m, and out of the box, the mini 2 for example can already be set to 500m.

I understand the reason behind people doing the so called FCC hack to increase their range, particularly in RF congested areas, but the height thing confuses me.
Is it just the fact that there is an artificial, software based limit at any level, or do you actually want to use the extra height?
I see this sort of question come up in various places quite frequently, and I have never got my head around it!

Perhaps if you want to take a continous video going up a hillside or mountain without having to stop, land, take off everytime your drone tells you you are above the legal height and wont go any higher?

Very fair point!

Most DJI drone have a hard wired max height above the take off point of 500m
but i believe the new Mavic 3 pro ,and maybe some other Mavic 3 line up of drones now has the ability to increase that limit to 1000m for a particular flight ,not sure if it stays after the flight is over, as i do not own a Mavic 3 ,if i am wrong then i apologise for my error

You’ve not mentioned what make/model drones your using and want to do this on?

That’s above the surface, which goes up and down (unless Norfolk!). If the ground is higher or lower than where you took off, the 120m on the controller screen won’t give you accurate height above surface anymore.

Not to mention there are rules flying over buildings >105m in height if the person responsible for the building has asked you to carry out a task.

You also assume that the OP isn’t travelling to somewhere in the world with more relaxed, or zero, restrictions … or where permissions have been obtained to do something unusual.

I mean - perhaps none of that is the case - but …

Possible on nearly all DJI with one site. My Air 2s and Mini are now completely unrestricted.

This is mainly for mountain flights, do you realise how difficult it can be to try to find somewhere 500m up a mountain to land and stop and start to reset the level.

I don’t see it as any problem whatsoever as I’m always walking up with it (not all the way thou) and never usually more than 20 or 30m away from the side of the mountain so in general I’m usually never more than roughly 200-300ft off ground level in line with a mountain.
Not got it to fly near or into airports or fly at 8000ft which I know it can do but no way am I risking my freedom or drone at that height or others flying other aircraft nearby, seen people do it and it is amazing to see the footage but such a stupid move.

The reason the height is set a a maximum 400’ is because aircraft fly with a minimum of 500’ as the take off height could be a different height above see level it given a 100’ gap in principle so it is for safety. If you could contact air traffic control you could find out what’s flying but it’s to complicated as drones are so small aircraft can’t see them. So be careful it’s to save lives.

The media would say otherwise

As @firstadekit said too, @narrowboatingdrone - on which make and model of drone? :man_shrugging:t2:

It’s simple , fly from a big mountain. That’s over 4400 feet in the UK alone,

Slightly missing the fundamental part of the OP’s question, there, I think.

Using FCC hack DJI Fly on Mavic 3 the max height seems to be set to 1000m

Possibly not a genuine question just a question to garner a response?..

The app says 1000m but can fly higher if you have applied the hack correctly

All the mods and hacks are the same in this respect.

Perhaps easiest way is to take off from the top of the mountain and fly down!
