That mud is no joke. Even at the base of the stairs my feet sank an appreciable depth and i dont have small feet

A wet suit provides more buoyancy .. when fully inflated resembling The Michelin Man. 
It would be possible to go for a swim when the water is deep enough.

Tho i suspect they require some form of proof of competence. I know some of the local small boat rental places do.
