Additional notes:
Apologies to those who can only fly on weekends. But if the weather is good for flying it's good for holidaymakers; on a weekend they jam the roads so that it will take you over 2 hours to get the five miles from this site to the top of the island.
So this is set for a Thursday with a moderate forecast at the time of writing.
Meet at the parking area on the left of the map, closest to the lake
The site is where a heavy anti-aircraft battery was based in WW2. The parade ground provides an area enclosed by mature trees and bushes on three sides, ideal for practice or familiarising oneself with a new drone. The gun pit area to the west gives views of the three remaining gun pits, the resultant lake from where gravel was extracted for building Mulberry Harbour sections and a couple of ammunition stores.
Outside the confines of the site are views to the Witterings, the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth, There is non-recreational to the west if you are flying something heavy. The site itself is relatively quiet, mainly used by dogwalkers.
There are a few places to sit, nearest toilets and refreshments a mile either way and adequate on site parking. If the traffic is bad at 19:00 there are plenty of pubs and vhippies around if you want to continue the meet elsewhere.
Please remember to wear your official Membership ID card to this club meetup — it helps other members recognise you straight away.
Official club meetup ID cards and lanyards are available from our shop:
