I’d be tempted but it’s my daughter’s birthday!!
Buy her a Mini SE for her birthday and bring her along to the meet then treat her to a slap-up burger feast at Mick’s …
![]()
THAT’s a birthday she will remember …
Dudes got a point there ![]()
Daily Opening times are based around 10am till 5pm at Fort Nelson…,
Royal Armories Members can park for free at the onsite car park (blue badge holders too) non-Members can pay for parking on arrival…, they operate no use of drones unless with prior approval!
I can’t do this one but I’ll hold out for the w/e meet. August is proving particularly busy for me. Hopefully there may be another in September, after the Big one, I’m keen to join a meet in this location ![]()

Hi new to this!
But visiting my sister in Portsmouth that week, have a mini SE myself flown it a few times love it, and can’t wait to upgrade! Would like to attend PROBABLY!!! Won’t bring the drone though ![]()
1: not sure brave enough or have skill set
2: if I take it to my sisters, I will be wanting to go out and fly it all the time. I don’t visit her very often.
But as I said would love to attend and meet up
hope that’s okay
Cheers, Alex
Hi @Alex72, it looks as though you’re quite new here ![]()
Why not nip over to the Introductions page, and say hello properly and tell us a bit about yourself. ![]()

Also Fleetlands FRZ is mainly operational beween 9-5 Mon-Fri and I suspect DSTL Portsdown West works similar hours.
Hence the start time of 17:30.
Nelson should be shut , I have permission from Fleetlands for out-of-hours flying and DSTL have been informed that flying will take placeto the west of them but their site will not be overflown.
Yes, and as I suspected the car park gates are shut after 5 pm. So for those visiting the museum prior to flying there is a £3 parking charge. After the place closes park in the car park entrances as shown on the map.
Their no drones policy is fine, it’s a place where the public congregate and close quarters fying might lead to problems or injury. They don’t control the airspace above them and, once the fort is closed there should be no danger to the public. I have previously emailed them so our presence after 17:30 should be no surprise.
You are more than welcome to come along. Why not bring the SE and your sister. She can see how drones allow photography from a different perspective and enjoy the views over Portsmouth and the Solent on what I hope may be a pleasant summer evening.
She can have a go herself, I’m happy for her to take the controls of one of mine!
If you do turn up without either your sister or your drone you are still more than welcome. If there are five people flying you wiil get at least seven opinions on how to fly!
Look forward to seeing you.
I’ll be attending this meetup @macspite, see you then ![]()

Hi Guys,
I think I read that someone from the Meet Group is planning on popping down to Fort Nelson this weekend/Monday to do a Recce which is great. Thanks.
I would like to offer some info now based purely on Google Maps. On the south side of the Portsdown Hill Rd, opposite the “Royal Armouries: Fort Nelson” site there may be a location where we can park and operate from. (Lat/Long Provided) This is one of two entrances giving access to the Fort Nelson Alternative Parking location. There is a sign stating the Gates will be closed at 16h30. If this is true, then I think there may be sufficient space to park a few cars at the entrance (4-6 maybe?) possibly more if we park efficiently etc.
Also, I read someone has obtained permission to fly here (EGRU014 FLEETLANDS FRZ)
I visited “Fleetlands – Gosport - StandardAero” in an attempt to see if I can obtain the Fleetlands FRZ flight permission on the date and time slot we are planning on flying.
I couldn’t seem to find the page I was looking for (probably exists, just I couldn’t find it!). I ended up calling them (Tel: 0239 2946100) and being provided with (Fleetlands.heliport@standardAero.com)
I then sent an email requesting flight permission and providing pertinent information. I had a call a few minutes later stated my request had been passed on.
As I have the day free on Thursday. I shall also probably pop down earlier during opening hours to have a look around and take some photos.
Apologises if some of the information I am supplying as already been provided by somebody else.
Thanks
Carlos
Depending on numbers, I guess we can also use the other Alternative Parking Entrance and even the Royal Armouries Entrance across the road. Something I have just through of. Is it worth letting the local Hampshire Police know what’s going on? A number of parked cars and people flying drones might attract attention and what we don’t want is interruptions from passing patrol cars.
I don’t mind informing them if the majority agree. Trying to think, is this a good idea or not??
You are right with the car parking - that entrance is one of the ones available to us. Also the one to the left opposite the red car as an overspill. To the left of that and just visible
is the public footpath that leads to the top of the car park when the gates ar closed, if necessary we can use that as a TOAL
The primary area to congregate is the driveway on the left of the picture leading up to the fort. Even with the gate closed there is room for six or seven cars if parked tightly. That is where I intend to TOAL.
I will be checking that out after chemo on Monday as it’s not too far from the hospital.
That some one is me. And I had posted that a copy of the permission for the group is availble by messaging me, no-one needs to contact Fleetlands independently.
Just to confirm
All related car parks are locked out of hours.
The area close to nelsons monument seems outside of the ‘nasty red circle of dont’ and there weren’t any ‘no drone’ signs on display in the grass car park or the entrance to the armoury so flying during opening hours seems possible.
Slightly off but related topic.
The weather seems fairly good in the area tomorrow so i might pop down and play chicken with a few boats passing by.
@uav_hampshire instagram has inspired me ![]()
That’d brilliant - Thanks ![]()
