Hi all, I have very limited experience of flying a drone, but have recently got the Mini 5 Pro. I’m curious as to whether the obstacle avoidance would allow me to fly it through a fairly restricted space (without turning OA off - I’m not that confident a pilot!).
This is the structure I want to fly through. The smallest open end (closest to the view shown) is about 3ft high and 5-6ft wide. Obviously, I’d need to clear the ends of overgrowth.
Would OA permit the drone to fly through this?
There doesn’t seem to be an official distance declared. Is it possible?
I have a mini 3 pro and it would not fly in that unless the OA is fully off ( sports mode ) as it will detect the sides and the brush at the entrance would also flag up - I did try something similar years ago with the mini 3 pro and it was having none of it - so I would say it will not let you get much closer than a foot or two away and stop.
I also would not recommend flying into that with the OA off or at all in the Mini 5 as the prop wash and lack of GPS will just cause it to bounce all over the place in there and it will end up in tears (same as flying indoors )
Thanks. I would’ve cleared the ivy to make room for a clear run, but I have no intention of flying it on Sports Mode, especially in a high-risk environment like this.
It’s a shame I can’t fly through it, but I knew it was a long shot before I asked
You can turn off the OA in other modes I am sure - but not knowing how big that space is its hard to say how it will perform - its not impossible by a long shot but you do need to know what your doing.
I would do it in the mini if flew it in the middle of that structure and it was maybe 2m across and I had around 2 foot above and bellow me - I think I could get away with that.
In the Avata I would 100% give it a go as that’s what its built for
Dial down sports mode so it’s slower than cine mode and fly it
As @LE60LAD says , i’d fly that with a Neo or Avata , saying that is probably throw the mini 2 down it too
Sensors off and prop protectors. It may lose GPS but you’ll probably be out the other side before the drone has a chance to drift. ![]()
Thanks all,
Based on the general feedback, it seems the OA wouldn’t allow it, so I’ll definitely not be trying this for the foreseeable. Once I’m a lot more adept and confident, I may do as suggested and dial back the speed/sensitivity of the controls so I can take it through really carefully.
Is it a public area. If so say where it is. Someone will be ready to give it a go lol
it’s in my parents’ back garden
Wow I’m addicted to watching amazing spaces and this would be up there as a project, I’m contemplating doing one myself with containers but it’s only in my head and if the wifey knew she blow a fuse.
I did a narrowboat tunnel yesterday, yeah its a good deal wider but the same considerations are in play.
Have your OA set to brake would be one way.
If it does decide its too close then at least it wont spaz out but sit there.
Personally, ild consider going with turning OA off and fly direct los in cine mode and not using the screen at all.
As mentioned you can play with the max speeds in each mode, set them fairly low and move up from there.
A final thought. Maybe look into prop guards? Or buy and avata 2? ![]()
Yes, I did see someone on YT use some prop guards to fly a mini indoors and thought about this being a possible safety precaution.
My flying is pretty erratic right now, so I’m not even contemplating it without OA. I’m currently working through all the settings to get some nice shots from the outside. It’s a nice project to work with close to base while I get my bearings.
There’s no rush - it’s been there around 85 years and survived an assault from a pneumatic drill in the 80s - it’s not going anywhere ![]()
It’s a great thing! It’s an air raid shelter likely built 1940-41, and was more complete when we moved there in 1976. It has lost its full height brick entrance and brick window protection at the rear, but it was a central part of so many games in our childhood and we’re so lucky to own such a fascinating piece of history.
It has also served as a home for toads!
And organ pipes!
One more thing to consider… check what the drone will do if it loses GPS/signal… if you have it set to “return to home”, it’s likely to try to rise up to its RTH height … and that’s not great !!
It shouldnt do anything unexpected if the controller and drone are in direct los and close to each other.
I had similar concerns when flying through that canal tunnel. I got a gps warning but the flight was uneffected.
Also, re the pro guards. Ill see if my 4’s fit or can be made to fit. Im not sure if specific 5 guards are available yet.
If you set obstacle avoidance to Bypass, and select Nifty, it will probably manage it. As has been noted, be careful of RTH settings (or fly through with good line of sight from the controller down the tunnel with plenty of juice in the batteries (you should be doing the last two anyway). I’d fly my Mini 4 Pro in this mode, and you’ve got even better obstacle avoidance in the Mini 5. As ever though, it’s got to be your decision, and you have to take responsibility for the consequences. Don’t just fly it cos some lass on here said it’d be OK ![]()
