I started my FPV journey with the Cetus X kit and time on Lift Off.
I’ve purchased the Radiomaster Boxer to improve on the basic controller in the Cetus kit.
I’m doing ok, crashed the X several times and even lost it once after an incident with my 6 year old.
Now I’m starting to think about what’s next.
Do I buy a better set of goggles or make do and start looking at creating a drone collection.
It is really depending on what you are after as your ‘next step’
Right now - you have what we call a set of ‘analog’ goggles - and with your ELRS radio it means you are equipped to fly any drone equipped with Analog VTX and ELRS receiver.
There are loads of ‘bind and fly’ options of every size from 65mm whoops to 10" long range beasts that would be compatible.
If you are ‘happy’ with your goggles - it would make sense to just buy or build a compatible drone… or several
If you feel you are lacking image quality, reception, range,… Then you may want to consider another set of goggles or switching to another video system all together.
Currently I’m struggling to fly well due to image quality, I cannot work out if it is poor quality box goggles or poor quality signal from a beginner drone (Cetus X).
If it the former I need new goggles or the latter it’s time to buy new drones
If I buy new goggles; stick with analogue and buy something like the Skyzone or plumb straight to digital but breaking a digital drone looks expensive (I’m on my third frame for the Cetus X).
By poor video quality - do you mean ‘always’ (even if you are close by the drone) or more the degradation when you get some distance between goggles and drone?
Might be good to also check some youtube video of the Cetus to make sure they matches your experience (you may have an issue with your specific drone or goggles)
I have never flown this specific drone tbh - Oscar Liang (another very reputable guru of the fpv world) mentions the poor range in his review and blames the drone antenna positioning for it.
He rates the goggles quite well (for the price) and does not decry the general video quality (so assuming your system is working as expected - you should have at least at close range a ‘good analog video experience’).
Don’t forget that if you get a good pair you can use them in the future with a digital system (but not DJI)
I have the Skyzone 04X with a Walksnail VRX and get a superb image, The PRO version has twin 1080p screens and is probably the best analogue goggle in the woorrrlllddd
Hey up, welcome etc
I really struggled with box goggles and a crappy controller when I started out. I got a radio master boxer crush and a pair of Skyzone 040 pro - both on silly special offer deals and now I still struggle - but I can see what I’m doing while I crash now
