Must visit sites in Northern Ireland

I’m travelling to Dungannon shortly for 7 days on a work trip. I’ll be taking the ferry and arriving in Larne, mid afternoon on a Sunday. Travelling back home the following Saturday. I’ve had a look on dronescene for ideas, but are there any “must see” places I should visit? Anywhere I should avoid? Anything I mustn’t do? Are there any rules/regs that are different to the UK mainland? I’ll be carrying a couple of SLRs as well as the mini2.

I’ve never adventured that part of the country so unsure of sites. Rules and regs are the same but from my experiences nobody cares.

I would make sure your not in a deep (religious) area especially with a English accent as what you find as innocent flying to others is spying :scream: after the police shooting recently in Tyrone the hardliners are suspicious of anything knew in the area atm and there be dickers on every street corner atm and even thou you don’t know it they know your about, be careful :+1:

I say goodluck on the weather, if you see a patch of good weather grab it as your be sure it will rain soon after.

With clocks going forward and it’s much brighter evenings then the mainland you definitely get some good late flying.

@FatController is the NI flyer here as he travels around and definitely knows more then me on locations so hopefully he able to help more.

That’s the route I used to take going across for university, the alternative 10 hr ferry from Belfast to Liverpool was a killer. There are many places that stand out in Ulster, most will appear I’m sure in the usual travel blogs, most of which are going to be along the north coast but if you get a chance to go a bit father south, the mountains of Mourne and their decent into the Irish Sea are stunning.

Larne itself is/was pretty as was Stranraer ( if that’s the ferry route you’re on). Dungannon was just up the road from Armagh where we were, it’s mostly farming but Armagh has an observatory and a cathedral but it’s been 40 years since I was there so much would have changed.

I’d echo all the points above, especially about the weather, I used to recon I’d ‘dry out’ in about a fortnight after coming across.

Should have also added, I’d love to see the footage and commentary when you’re done, I’d like to go back at some point.

@DazC Darren, I wouldn’t presume to be qualified to tell you what are ‘must see’’ locations, but as a photographer yourself you’ll know what type of subjects you prefer. There are plenty of places where you’ll be able to get good pictures, and as you’re using a Mini 2 you’ll have few restrictions. Just make sure to check Drone Scene for restrictions when you go to fly - there are a few glider and microlight clubs about. You’ll notice that Drone Scene is lacking entries for that part of the country because none of us has flown there, but if you come across anything worthwhile don’t forget to add it. I don’t think there’s much in Dungannon itself, but Beaghmore Stone Circles (half an hour away near Cookstown looks worthwhile - it’s on my to do list). You’re close to Lough Neagh and also Armagh both of which are good for photos. Best advice is to keep the Mini 2 in the car with the batteries ready to go. If you see something you like the look of stop and make the most of it before the wind or rain kicks in.

This chap is based there check out his channel The Drone Creative - YouTube

Go to the Square in Dungannon there is old castle :european_castle: up there well what’s left of it and try the Blacklough it’s got a small island :desert_island: in the middle but it’s a great place to fly :sunglasses:

His voice goes through me :rofl:

And me! The frequent ‘what you’re gonna wanna do’ and his use of ‘them’ instead of these or those detracts from what is actually pretty good advice. I’d watch more of his videos if the voice wasn’t so annoying.

:joy::joy::joy::shamrock:

:joy: I was born there and even I find it hard to understand :joy:

Bit late replying on this thread as I’m travelling in ZA. If you get a chance to go north from Larne, the Antrim coast is fantastic - Bushmills, Giant’s Causeway, White Rock Sands, Dunsevrick Castle, Ballintoy Harbour, etc. If you head west from Co Tyrone then the sea stack and Downpatrick Head is worth a trip
