I’d make sure that’s in writing with clear timespans and how do they police that

Will you be monitored

Still regard any organisation demanding a fee to fly in free space not owned by them and asking for both ID’s a cheek, I’d want a copy note of what their doing with my ID’s when submitted. The ID on the drone is sufficient to keep the police happy the drone is registered, don’t see them asking for anything else.

when you pay your parking charge, are you sure you are paying it to the right person’s?

…the organisation demanding the cash may not be the actual land owner…

I had an interesting one a number of years ago… parked in a car park, bought a ticket from a machine went off came back and id been given a ticket… why… park of the car park is owned by the council and part by a major brand shop…,. I contested on the grounds one could not tell who owned which car park… and I had been done by the council… I recommended putting big clear signage and road markings on the floor.,… I even argued that the signage did not confirm to the signage and road markings manual… I lost my appeal and given it was the council I caved and paid… about 3 weeks later… new clear signs erected and road markings were painted… now I was miffed… as that was everything I recommended!!!

20 years goes by… yup I hold a grudge and I stumble across a website and map showing offshore ownership of land… so being a curious sort of fellow have a look at our small town… what do I find!!! the 'kn council don’t own the land!!! whilst this may be insignificant it’s actually quite major as the council parking tickets have a higher standard or level of legal status than a private parking charge notice… and these fkrs are using that leverage on land they down own and is actually owned by an offshore company!!!

after that I will always check to so who owns the land before paying anything!!!

Fair enough but I still don’t agree with paying to fly , especially something that’s not even related to commercial gains for myself. Once one person pays a body to fly on land everyone jumps on the same route

If I am flying with myself and spotter and a low number of other people I agree. I would not like to pay.

However it a meetup and I am stumped for locations. I tried lots in this area.

Suggestions welcome for a place south west of London, that is interesting for Camera drones and FPV drones, that is accessible, that has toilets nearby and is free for TOAL.

Perfect is the enemy of good.

From Drone filming | English Heritage

Latest from EH:

The site manager has suggested popping a notice on the webpage to advise of drone filming taking place on 27th July – as this site isn’t staffed it would be hard for us to close it off completely to any visitors who do happen to turn up.

<rant>
Which does annoy me.
Paying ££££. And the site manager does nothing.
Up vote for people who support open-access.

Andy - English Heritage are charging us per pilot. They have not asked for any details about drivers of RC Cars. So hopefully makes sense now… Posting after a few wines last night.

@bmsleight Hey Brendan, Nudge nudge, wink wink…now I’m getting your drift sir!

Andy :sunglasses:

Honesty doesn’t always pay. If the site isn’t staffed, they’d have never known about a meet up if you’d not asked :wink:

Yep, tactical error.
Not sure people would be confident to turn up there is not public right of way close to TOAL. I thought it would be a single 36 quit payment, not a discount of 36 quid - (28.8 per person). You live and learn.

Hi Dave - I am quite up for this, the cost is prohibitive £36[*] per person, but I wanted to see if we tried to follow everything EH wanted - where would it end-up ?

I think by there own rules, they would have to close places. I am happy to work on getting another booking after this one.

[*] I negotiated it down to £28.80. But insurance costs, FlyerID etc counting as a sunk cost already.

My comment was, obviously, largely in jest … other than “the precedent has been set”.

I also realise that closing Stonehenge (that must take a fortune every day!) is a pipedream.

But - it will be interesting to gauge any feedback from them which might start to break down barriers and make approaching them about other locations an easier task.

Genuinely - well done. And I hope it all goes well.

This one all started when I was a little busy with other things, so probably didn’t read everything in detail Had I done so I’m not so far away that I couldn’t have added another pilot to the number. Now sorry that I’m didn’t.

I shall be watching … :+1:

I few other people want to fly it who can not make it tomorrow. Once back from holiday - I will try and get another date, if the weather holds out.

Thats the plan. Just the £36[*] per person is not very aligned with their charitable aims.

Larger numbers might manage to reduce that. After all - if they are closing a location, it’s their only income whist it’s closed … and, 25 people at £15 is more money for them than 10 people at £30 … and, even just for the fun of it, becomes more affordable thing for many.

Aim for free of charge outside opening hours please

Feedback from English Heritage.

  • Great news that you would like to come back
  • Bishops Waltham would be a similar arrangement as would most of our Free to Enter sites.
  • Paid sites would be more difficult trying to navigate multiple drones around paying visitors, and some sites are in close proximity to military bases which would also prove challenging so always best to check with us first!
  • flag you had up was weighted and not staked to ground.
  • Also a polite notice to please ensure all pilots have their eyes on drones all the times and refrain from flying too close to ruins so as to keep our conservation team happy

We have not burnt any bridges, but at £30 we are paying a lot. (Plus op ids, flyer ids, insurance)

Would be next year - I think. It looks like a fun site, trying to nudge EH into bigger and better sites, Heck even a ‘paid’ site. Any bando in a nice plain open space with power loops options ?

Can they enforce this from Public ?

English Heritage does not permit drone flying from or over sites in our care, except by contractors or partners undertaking flights for a specific purpose, who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have the correct insurances and permissions, and are operating under controlled conditions.

Yes.

No.
