National Trust Policy Correspondence

Hi Graham welcome to GADC

Where abouts in Kent are you? Also which specific parks are you talking about?

0_Kent_map

Many councils and privately owned Parkland etc have a no drone policy but these cannot be used to prevent overflight of a drone if TOAL from a public area; unless of course they fall within a FRZ (even then permission to fly can be obtained in a lot of instances). Just watch that your not trespassing when you do so!

I checked out at least 5 Councils in Kent and non of them had any bylaws with regards to UAV’s, but best to check for yourself using Drone Scene. IMP it is unlikely you would be prosecuted for carrying out legal flights in any of the areas I checked, and judging by the loads of DS pins in the screenshot I suspect their authors would agree with me.

Your drone, however, is greater than 249g and therefore you would be restricted in the places where you can fly under CAA regs (I’m sure you would be aware of these if you have a Op ID). I would suggest more rural areas (with no uninvolved people or buildings to avoid) would be more suited to your drone.

Don’t be discouraged from following your chosen hobby just be more savvy where you can go and remember there are loads of secondhand sub 250g drones out there if you decide a more built up residential area was where you wanted to fly regularly.

Lots of councils have no-drone policies but a policy is a waste of their time (& our money). Only a byelaw can stop you TOAL from their property.

I think your stance on the subject is the perfect way to go. Last thing we want to do is upset people.

Common sense is the way to go. Flying out of hours when staff have gone home is unlikely to upset anyone. Consideration for wildlife should be given though

So pleased to join all of you here and feel part of a great community.
I bought a drone sub 250g but its rubbish so bought a Holystone 700e which is good for the price but at 557g is now very restrictive.
So yes I have Op and Flier ID… all labelled up and do not want to upset anyone…
So need to make sure I abide by the rules and hope to get a DJI sub 250g when I can afford one. I want it for ariel photography…
Thanks to everyone here for your tips and advice…
I live in Maidstone…
Can I fly in Mote Park?

I live in Maidstone and I wanted to fly at Teston Country park along the river bank

No Bylaws according to FOI Maidstone Council return to Simon Hawkins request and DS this is a screenshot from DS

Mote Park looks like a busy place to me and unless you’ve got Article 16 or A2 CofC you cannot fly over people or near buildings. I couldn’t find anything on their website regarding drone policy though.

Drones and model aircraft that weigh 250g to 500g (I think yours is over 500kg).
If you’re flying a drone or model aircraft that’s between 250g
and 500g, you can fly closer to people than 50m, but you must
not intentionally fly over them

There is a Prison nearby and Microlight airfield FRZ but not where you want to fly. You need to learn how to use Drone Scene.

Become a full member of GADC and you have all the info at your fingertips. Also fill in the Good 2 Go form accessed from the menu burger sign, which will confirm where you can fly your drone.

If you do your due diligence before a flight, assess the risks and are able to respond if asked questions regarding the safety of your flight you should be ok. I live in Stafford whose council have a blanket ban on drones as a policy… I was soon put straight by learned members on this forum when I joined 12 months ago about that and I soon understood that the council on this occasion can stick their policy up their hairy … with respect of course.

I know the National Trust. Does not like you flying drones from there land, but you can fly over, there land from none national trust site near to there land.
What if the national trust is the whole top of the downs land area, but has a public road going right through the middle of it. The road is a very quiet road with only one/the same entrance and exit road. The google map car has travelled along it and you can view it on foot via google earth. Can I take off and land from the road and not get into trouble. There are also blue circles drawn across the national trust site with 360 degrees scenery also covered by google earth maps . Can I stand in that circle and fly from within the circle . Has any one else come across the google earth car blue circles.

@Gary.at.IOW moved your post to the existing thread on National trust.

Most roads are owned by the highways department. Which is usually the county rather than the local authority.

You might be able to establish the ownership or control of the road via Findmystreet.co.uk

Where are you talking about @Gary.at.IOW Gary,
this isn’t from drone scene but from NT own site.

As you can see i’ve highlighted the road that they show they don’t own. As an example

Culver Down Road. Off the B3395
Sandown. Isle of Wight.

Only the green is NT what do you wish to capture or is it just a reactional flight ?

this may help too image taken from Map | FootPathMap.co.uk

depending on what you want to film, i think your options are quite open as they don’t own that much but it looks like they do own the road from the fort down to culver down.

you can find this info here.

Discover the National Trust Land Map | National Trust

i don’t think they have shared all the data with Rich for him to implement on dronescene.

so what about planes and helicopters that make so much more noise when flying over ha! they have no clue

Hi. I was hoping to takeoff from the road, if it was not owned by NT and fly over there land , purely to capture footage of the scenery.

If you can get access to the fields surrounding the NT land you should have no problen as the NT land is not very wide , Happy Flying

Looks like public land on the other side of the road on the way up to it, the coastal path goes past the Yarborough Monument and the Culver Haven Inn so I would just park in the NT car park and step back over the threshold. The ground around the monument looks clear enough for a safe take off.

Hi. Please tell me your thoughts on this replay from island road’s regarding my previous conversation. I have not replied to them yet. Just wanted to run it by you guys that are not a novice like myself. My drone is a DJI mini 3 pro, so sub 250 gram. I will have my flyer ID and operator ID I will have some sort of insurance as well just for peace of mind. The flight is purely a fun flight. for scenery, photography for myself, Please see there reply.

Dear Mr Knight,

The road is public highway and therefore permission to fly from the road must be requested from Island Roads who manage this highway on behalf of Isle of Wight Council.

We note that the CAA Drone Code provides guidance for flying in proximity to recreational areas, residential or commercial and industrial sites as well as people that are not in your control which would include users of the public highway. We also note that the area you have described is close to Bembridge Airport and therefore an area of increased flight risk where you should be considering other aviation activity.

For us to consider your question, please could you provide the following information:

  • Your CAA Operator and Flyer ID
  • The type of drone, or the take-off weight of your drone
  • The category of operation for your planned flight
  • A copy of either your A2 CoC or GVC as necessary for your flight category
  • Details of any drone insurance you hold
  • Details of your flight plan and risk assessments

With this information, we would be happy to advise if it would be possible to grant permission to fly from the public highway at this location on specified dates.

For absolute clarity, no permission is currently granted and we would request that you fly in strict accordance with the CAA drone code in either open category A1 or A3.

Kind regards
