I’ve just received my Freewell ND filters for my Mini 2 and whenever I attach it to the camera after I turn it on I get "Gimbal is Stuck’ message in orange lettering. Without the ND filter the camera is level and simply points forward, once I put attach the filter however, the camera points down and then I get the error message.
The way that I’m attaching the filter is:
I turn the Mini 2 off.
I hold the Mini 2 vertically, camera faces up parallel with rest of drone.
Carefully and slowly guide the camera so that it’s at 90°.
Starting at the back with the vents, I hook the filter on and secure it to the camera.
At this point the camera gimbal is pointing down permanently.
When I go into the DJI Go Fly app setting and select ‘Gimbal Calibration’ nothing happens to the camera gimbal at all.
As soon as I remove the filter, the camera resets itself back to the normal position.
Other filters in the Standard 4 Day Pack all do the same thing. Even checked my Amazon order and its definitely for a DJI Mini 2 drone.
Having done all of this I’m no further forward here so any help is definitely appreciated. Hopefully someone can suggest a workaround.
Sorry, this wont be of much help. But I get the same too, sometimes it works ok and sometimes it doesn’t. Seems worse with the polariser, possibly because it’s a little heavier? It never happened on my previous mini 2 with the old firmware, only on the locked down junk they sent me after using care refresh. Probably coincidence? But as yet I’ve not found a way to fix it.
I used ones like these for video only (I had 4 pack and didn’t bother with the polarised one as waste of time with a drone imo). Didn’t like the look of the Freewell ones as they were much bulkier in design. These are robust but the clamp is metal and very thin. Never had an issue with them.
Ps. Deleted previous edit as the URL was iffy so found a better one.
Thanks for this. I still have the issue so will either return them and get new ones or go without. Not entirely sure how my question got ‘Solved’ on its own, but I’ll take D0c.Col’s advice and try what he was talking about. Thanks again.
Hi, thanks for the advice, think I’ll take you up on it and send them back and go for the ones you mentioned. I’m not sure how my question has been ‘Solved’ as I’m only just back to my pc again after being away all day but yep, your advice seems to be on point !! Thanks again.
I don’t know much or anything at all about the mini 2 but this guy I’ve followed on YouTube for ages, seems to get it right most of the time, he also leaves a link for the mini 2 filters he chooses, maybe worth a look,
Edit : that said I see you have free well, sorry but might be good for a tip or two.
Thanks, for the advice on this, this has been at the front of my mind when I saw the camera for the first time when I opened the box so I’ll bear this in mind. Do you use any filters, if so which ones ? Thanks again for getting back to me.
That’s ok, the guys above really know there stuff on the mini 2 I know, so I’m not going over anyone’s head here by no means but, as said he knows his stuff too & is a big fan of the mini 2, just trying to help out if I can, good luck
He leaves links in his description for what he uses & or works for him.
There are some GADC members who do not use ND filters and can’t see the point of them. I would agree if all your doing is taking pictures. However, there are many of us that do use them for videos. If you like pin sharp videos that look unnatural in motion then dont use them. If you want your videos to blur in the way the human eye sees movement then they help to give this effect. Dont take my word for it; there are a plethora of well known YT videos on this subject, some by respected members of this club (not me I might add ), that you can watch. Here is one:
DJI do not support ND filters for the mini 2 but I have used the ones I advocated on my mini 2 and my gimbal is in fine working order after over 100k of flights. They are not bulky and weigh next to nothing. If applied with care, I do not see how they can damage the gimbal. I have never had to recalibrate my gimbal after putting them on, nor have they affected my videos. Notwithstanding the above, if you have any doubts then leave them, I’m betting You’ll still enjoy flying your drone.
Thanks for this, this really helped. As I’m using the mini 2 for videos then an nd filter in brighter sunlight and reflective light might be my best option as I currently use then on my Canon 650D. Thanks again.
Freewell have got back in touch to say that I should be trying to attach the filters with the Mini 2 turned ON which although it did attach, I feel that this might damage the sensitive camera, Would anyone else agree with me that the camera might get damaged ? I’d really love to hear what your thoughts are on being told to attach with it power on. Here’s a copy of the email which they replied to me. Thanks again everyone.
Hey Martin,
Thanks for your message.
Thanks may happen due to the gimbal tolerance; please install it after putting the DRONE ON; that should solve this issue.
I’ve never attached filters with drone on, as you say it’s sensitive fragile & it moves when on, so you don’t want too wrestle with it as your damage the motor, so I’m voting keep it turned Off
Try that @outRAGEis and check your filters are not bent / damaged like he says in video, I don’t usually watch this guy but it might help, hope so, good luck
If I remember correctly with the new wide angle and anamorphic lenses, if you add the nd filter to them aswell they are to heavy for the camera gimble on start up, and they suggest adding them after powering on your drone. not tried it myself as ive not yet bought the new lenses,
perhaps someone here who has them could confirm if that was true or not?
