New EASA drone rules - 1 July 2020 - Discussion

One for Mavic Mini owners to consider for the future … any drone will be able to fly within 50m of structures in the future, so long as not in a residential, industrial, commercial or recreational area. You will also be able to fly up to 15m above any obstacle if you stay within 50m of it. And if you have a sub-250g legacy drone, like the Mavic Mini, you can fly into congested areas anyway, and you can fly within 50m horizontally of uninvolved people, so long as you don’t fly directly above them.

So who’s going to be the first to fly up and over this, and get some drone shots from 345m above ground level?

Really? So I could fly over my housing estate rather than skirting the edges? That would be nice

That can’t be true - it sounds too much like common sense.

This is in the ‘must do it when the good weather comes’ bucket

Even if the height of said obstacle is >120m ?

Yes, it’s very clear about that. But we’ll only know for sure when the updated ANO is published.

I think this is similar to the USA they assume if an aircraft (read passenger jet to get my drift ) is within 15M of a tall building then your little drone is the least of its worries :disappointed:

For the actual text see https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32019R0947&from=EN Annex A UAS.OPEN.010 (3).

But this is aviation regulations. You will be operating a small unmanned aircraft. Anybody who decides to fly must abide by aviation regulations. These regs are in place for safety.

Yes, this is true

I’d Personally be very wary of flying around this with the potential for controller errors issues ?

And just imagine the backlash on drone users if you caused someone to miss their favourite TV program :see_no_evil: :grimacing:

I’m not personally recommending it, but if the new regs permit it, somebody is bound to have a go. Obviously, for my example of a Mavic Mini, you’d lose VLOS long before it reached the top anyway.

Do the new regs permit it? I assume that the distances mentioned all come within the 400 feet max. Not that clear I admit!

The new regs allow flying above 400ft if close to a structure.

What drones though I thought C0?

Whilst always keen to stay within the Law, I am tiring of of the ever increasing invasion of bureaucratic tyranny into my life, I think I’m going to return to my default M.O. of using common sense and sod the suits
Life is too short for this nonsense.

It seems to me that if reactions to drones were applied to cars , then one road accident would mean all cars would be banned from driving, and one air crash would ground all planes. Yes there are idiots flying drone who fly there drones outside the limits of heights and distance, but everyone suffers, unlike cars and other potential dangerous things

Do you want to risk getting a fine?

Bigger risk of that every time you get behind the wheel of a car. Although in this case the rules are quite clear and non ambiguous, unlike the myriad of maybes, ifs and buts around drone regulation.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone ;o)

I fly within the rules, it was just an observation, comparing other potential dangerous machines
