North Devon and 50m right of way

I am going to be staying in North Devon (Croyde) in May as i do every year and have been looking online at byelaws preventing me from flying. I spoke with Devon council who said Drones are not to be flown within 50m of a public right of way. Now i may be stupid or reading to much into this but does anyone know if this is for all drones above and below 250g? Any help to clear this up would be great.

Hi @Hazmat86 it looks as though you’re quite new here :wave:t2:

Why not nip over to the Introductions page, and say hello properly and tell us a bit about yourself. :+1:t2:

North Devon Council have no byelaws relating to the recreational use of drones from their land.

I think they made that up on the fly

Drone Scene 'Good To Go’ is your friend. The 50m sounds to me like a misreading of the old rules appertaining to drones over 250g in weight. If you ask a council or similar body the question ‘can I fly here’ the default answer will be ‘no’, because the person you ask might not have detailed knowledge of either their own or the CAA’s rules and will want to cover themselves for the inevitable crash, damage, and death that we all know from reading the papers occurs with every amatuer drone flight

If you do your research but don’t actually go on the record as asking, you have at least some defence if you fly and are challenged, you can truthfully state that ‘I checked online, couldn’t see any prohibition, and I’m within the CAA rules & Drone Code’. If the challenger can produce documentary proof that flying is forbidden, apologise, land, and go somewhere else.

Incidentally, there’s a beach at Croyde; I know this because I spectacularly failed to learn how to surf standing up there many years ago. You’ve got to be cool and hansome to surf, and I shoulda known better; back to your body-board you ug! The intertidal area of the foreshore is Crown Estate land, and you can TOAL from and fly over it; you can fly over anywhere of course except a restricted zone, red for permanent blue for termporary NOTAM. There is s red zone a couple miles south at Braunton Burrows, target practice area for the military, click on the red zone on the Drone Scene map for info.

Incidentally, I checked Croyde out on ‘Good To Go’, and it’s fine for my Mini 2 sub-250g bird

Cheers lads appreciate the feedback, it has answered alot. I will only be taking my mini 4k with me, even tho I have my A2 CofC I will not be able to fly the Mavic in as many places. I currently use drone assist and saw the NFZ at Braunton. The only areas near Croyde are SSSI’s but I researched it and its only to protect the plant life, lichen and rock formations so should be pretty good to fly all over. Thanks again for your help.

That was a bloke at Devon County Council. This is why i thought i woyld post on here as people who live or have flown around Devon would know alot more.
