Oakhampton Castle, West Devon - Added to Iconic Landscapes and Ancient Sites in South West

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene:

Okehampton Castle is a fantastic location to explore and photograph from the air. The ruins sit above the West Okement River, surrounded by woodland and rolling Devon countryside, giving you some brilliant views of the castle and the landscape around it.

The castle dates back to shortly after the Norman Conquest and was later developed into a grand medieval residence. There is still a surprising amount to see, including the remains of the keep, gatehouse and other buildings, and it’s well worth exploring on foot as well as photographing.

From the air, the elevated keep and ruined walls really stand out against the surrounding trees, and you get a completely different perspective on the scale and position of the castle.

It’s easy to find and there is parking close to the castle. There are signs stating that drone flying is not permitted from within the castle grounds, so we walked up to New Road using the footpath at the back of the disabled car park and flew from there instead.

We waited until the area was quiet before flying and had some great views back towards the castle. As always, check current airspace restrictions and make sure you have permission to take off and land from your chosen location.

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 28/09/2026. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location. Landowner permission may be required before taking off.
