Old external hard drive is breaking down it’s over 12 years old

Can someone maybe try & help me please,
Today I’ve been trying to sort out some memorabilia & the old hard drive along with my old Mac, the external hard drive keeps crashing,
I’ve managed to put 5800 odd photos in folders but it won’t let me drag & drop to another sd / usb storage, these pictures I have not backed up anywhere else, like most I’d be devastated to lose them,
Does please anyone know how I get these transferred asap, would really really appreciate the help, I don’t know what I’m doing wrong,
Many thanks in advance

Edit sorry, I was meant to say is there a quick way to do this before it completely packs up …

Not a mac user, but what i would do is try and copy a raw image of the drive somehere before doing anything else.
Then try script something that will copy files one by one from the mounted image to a new location, skipping if it already exists, logging any failures.
Then look at the failures and see if it is worthwhile going further.

Does mac have a dd equivalent (linux)

I haven’t a clue, thanks for your help.

It does.

@Kirky - from your desktop Cmd+Shift+U then find and open ‘Disk Utility’. Then select and highlight your drive (left hand side) and the run First Aid.

But if it was mine then I’d be lookign to take it to a recovery specialist - and I work with IT. Bottom line is don’t do anything stupid and don’t put any more stress (use) on the drive than you need to at this stage.

Ok I really appreciate yr help, it’s now copied one file 30 GB to the documents on the laptop,
I’m just trying to copy another folder, as you say,
If it starts playing up again I’ll need to give the old hard drive to a specialist,
Many thanks

If I can get them safely on to laptop which has a ssd I think I’ll be ok :crossed_fingers:t2:

Agreed, hence the working from an image. But a reputable pro is always better

Thankyou, well appreciated …

SSD’s fail as well. Once they are safe, then you need to consider a backup strategy be that print them out, or online backups or spare HDD/SSD’s taht are only used as master dump areas.

Dont, just clone the whole disk to your desktop (if you have space) in one chunk

Thankyou
That’s exactly the plan, only when I realised this today, also the old hdd is usb 2.0 but on my new Mac it’s type c, I have no adapter so I’m kinda racing against the clock so to speak before it packs up :grimacing: hence why I’m also having to use my old Mac, hope that makes sense, many thanks

There is a freeware program Recuva which can retrieve JPEG images from reformatted SD and CF and USB drives. Anything not actually overwritten. It probably works on hard drives too. You’ll probably need another hard drive as the destination - or a big flashdrive or card.

Thankyou, there slowly moving across to the mac, where I shall then move them again, I’m on the last folder now 5 of 5, when I tried to move all 5800 odd pics & videos was when it kept crashing,
Once there on the Mac, I send them to another sd & usb just for now, as I’ve still no external ssd, yep should have got one sooner :person_facepalming:t2: wake up call now, I know all our pictures are precious & all my others I have 3 copies, this one no copies at all,
Never thought I’d need it & things I’ve read / learnt on here I would have not known otherwise, or thought rather there safe forever, which there not … thankyou appreciated

Thankyou for your help

Hard drive is roasting :hot_face::scream:

Right there on the Mac now, in documents, I can’t seem to get them to this

Just for now, then I’ll back up to the cloud when I go on my other Mac, this one is my sons now so has not my details on it, just using it for the transfer,
Can’t remember how to do it :person_facepalming:t2: sorry, really appreciate the help …

Dont try drag drop that all in one go

Folder at a time drag over to the untitled drive icon and its should copy (repeat 5 times)

Like he says
Also, Invest in Carbon Copy Cloner, used it for years and does what you need it to do…which is what you’ve not been doing…BACK UP!

I drag it over & it rejects it Chris, it won’t let me copy & paste either, thanks
