OpenHD Build thread

The weather is terrible. Waiting for parts to arrive, so thought I would try OpenHD

@GunjaFPV mentioned that no one had tried it yet.

Claims of 100ms latency. General-FAQ - OpenHD
They have a list of alternatives. OpenHD vs Alternatives - OpenHD I may try out the competition, but i like the design concept in openHD and the development goals.

Used an old laptop, booting from USB as the ground station. Using a PI Nano 2 W as the air unit.

Ground station

Air Unit

Total rough costs so far: £78

So claims of 100ms, I am getting 230 ms, but I not tweaked the power supplies or wiring. The latency does not appear to increase with distance. Claims 1-3 km is easy to achieve - claims even up to 75km.

Some video/photos of set-up and latency:- (Yes I have too many laptops).

The laptop is low powered and running as a ‘live os’ not installed OS with graphics drivers. Not using a recommended SPC Okdo ROCK ZERO 3W. Latency can be improved by: Laptop install, PSU (beef and regulate), Rock Zero and camera (Arducam).

Rough set-up so far as - First Time Setup - OpenHD.

Lots of fun - next steps

  1. Install Live OS as real Hard Drive based OS. Test in under-powered first (maybe install daily driver if latency not improved)
  2. Purchase and wire up flight controller
  3. Purchase and install on 3.5 inch frame (or wing??)
  4. Purchase and install voltage regulators.
  5. Hard wire USB connection on external WIFI.
  6. Test latency
  7. Motor and props
  8. Profit

I love the concept of using a laptop as ground station and an air unit £60. I can fly by watching the laptop and wearing my glasses - no extra lens required. Can use lots of Raspberry PI cameras - the cost of a damaged camera is low. As well as modular. I am guessing it would be really good in a wing. Nice excuse to get a wing?

Running the live-OS (from USB Drive). Makes no difference in latency.

Still 230ms

:scream: OK for LR planes but bad for racing/freestyle quads

ArduPilot, Mision Planner with camera feed into the laptop :thinking:

Getting down to 150ms for 1280x720_60fps and 130ms at 640×480_90fps
(Frame rate was set at 30fps before! Unusual default).

Getting down to 130ms for 1280x720_60fps and 90ms at 640×480_90fps by overclocking the PI 2 Zero

#OpenHD does not “overclock” the rpi by default - doing so is possible, but not recommended.
#However, we increase the “minimum frequencies” to not fall below a specific performance threshold

#Overclock
arm_freq=1300
core_freq=525
over_voltage=6
gpu_freq=700

Need to use USB pads for next step. I f**king hate soldering. New glasses, new solder, new iron, flux. And still burnt my hand twice and it looks terrible.

.

Wow that looks… er… terrible :smile: … Anyways, assuming it works that’s what matters.

Looks like a nice set up. I assume this is the kit for the Fixed Wing.

Don’t give up your day job :joy: looks even worse when you zoom in :scream:

Tip :grinning: tin the wires :+1:

And the pads first :upside_down_face:

Yep, quite embarrassing.

Need to set a task for some of my apprentice engineers.

I did!!

How hot :fire: was the iron :grinning:

  1. Non-lead solder.

Tips.

  1. use flux cored leaded 60/40 solder ( for the amount you use the planet won’t suffer)
  2. use silicon wire (the insulation doesn’t shrink back or melt)
  3. solder at 380deg.
  4. tin the wire ends and pads first, get them nice and shiny

A case for your zero

360?! For pads and wires that size. Get to 400/420(I know others blah for that) and definitely leaded. Though boy maybe not… That needs more practise mate. Get some practice boards (a good fiver well spent then practice and loft pads to your hearts content), see what works for YOUR gear. Really wouldn’t recommend flying something soldered like that

Brutal. :slight_smile:

That’s not solder that’s just bird shit :grinning: :running_man:

I would do, but my soldering iron case was being printed. When I removed it, took part of the coating of glass bed off when I removed it. I HATE everything to do with soldering.
(New bed ordered and the ‘hair spray’ you recommended.) SOLDERING!

Anyway 97 min winner and a returned drone tomorrow.
