Patch Antennas

Patch Antennas do you use them, what kind, and would you recommend them,

They are great on your goggles when paired with an omnidirectional such as a Pagoda
The patch will give you longer range so you have to ensure your head is pointing towards your quad
Their primary use is on a tripod mounted automatic antenna tracker to always follow your quad as it fly’s though the sky ranged can be many miles then, even tens of miles with the right kit :slightly_smiling_face:

I seem to recall @Nidge giving me the same advice, as I’m currently using 2 pagoda-style on my Cobra-Xs and my video reception is, frankly, pants.

For some reason, I didn’t rush out (even virtually) and buy a new antenna. But, when I met up with @Jon-Denise last weekend he let me have a bash with his Eachine EV800DMs - the key feature being they were fitted with a pagoda and patch. I didn’t notice any improvement. :frowning: I still got almost complete loss of video at around 80m, direct line of sight, even when I was looking directly at it.

What was notable, however, was that I could see the screen perfectly without my glasses; unlike the two pairs of goggles I currently own.

I’m sure Nidge and Stevie know what they’re talking about. My limited experience so far is that it didn’t help.

:person_shrugging:

Of course, I’m talking analog, so I’m already at a “disadvantage”.

I’ve got one of the Team Black Sheep ones on my goggles along with a long omni TrueRC antenna. The long wire puts the onmi up above my skull. This seems to work well for me both long and short range and behind me.

I was a fair way away with one of my quads at the weekend and still getting decent video reception. I also fly behind myself a fair amount in bandos when the omni must be kicking in and that works well as well.

The goggles are Eachine EV300O with RapidMix module.

I did at one point have two omnis and I found that the goggles kept on switching between each other producing interference. This was with EV800D goggles with diversity though, which is not as good as the rapid mix.

One of mine is a tall Foxeer (I think) which sticks up well above my head. But I’m getting crap reception even under ideal conditions, across all three quads. The 3" with the tiny little pigtail antenna is actually one of the better ones.

(Sorry, @BigDog, didn’t mean to thread-jack.)

We’ll have to try your quad with my goggles and vice versa. See which is bad.

I assume all have the same polarisation?

Yup. Chili Peppers all the way.

Have you double checked the band/channel too? Could be on a close but not quite right channel maybe?

Yes, all set manually and correct.

As Richard says you need to narrow it down to quad/goggle issue first by trying with someone elses goggles. That will point in the right direction :+1:t2:

There is 2 reasons for my post, firstly I’m thinking of purchasing the below but not sure if I would be wasting my money. Even though I’m on Dji I to still loose signal sometimes, and not 100% what kind of
penetration I would get with these…
https://www.personaldrones.it/prodotti/dji/dji-fpv/22226-lumenier-axii-2-hd-58ghz-patch-antenna-per-dji-fpv-goggles

Secondly, I met one of those Youtube/Instagram influencers while out last week, got chatting explained what he did so I thought Id sign up to his social media. He had a pair of these so I thought Id drop him a line for some feedback on them to which he has blanked me…

Now, is this me being a little melodramatic as I thought as a community we were a kicking the ball in the same direction.

Well I know we are on here.

That said after 5 days of waiting for a response Iv now removed him from all of my social media and going forward I will stick with the genuine people on here… :+1:t3:

Hmmm… well that’s DJI… a complete different ballgame as not only is it digital, but they also transmit and receive and also work on two different frequencies at the same time.

We need someone with DJI to answer this I think…

I’m off down the farm tomorrow morn if you fancy it, going to give this Bando malarkey a go :man_facepalming:t3:

I brought 4 new arms for the Nazgul so should be ok …lol

I’ll have to see how it goes. Got the builders coming in the morning, supposedly.

Even though they are all CP are they all of the same flavour of CP, all LHCP / RHCP?

Are you using any SMA adaptors such as right angle adaptors or SMA to RPSMA connectors? Some of the cheap generic offerings can be very lossy at 5.8GHz as the dialectric used might not be very RF friendly. I nearly lost a quad because the right angle adaptor I was using on an omni antenna was open circuit.

I believe you’re using the Skyzone Cobra X goggles with the Steadyview receiver. The receiver needs to be calibrated from new or whenever a firmware upgrade is done. If the receiver isn’t calibrated properly the switching when in diversity mode becomes hit and miss, when in mix mode it performs very badly. Talking of mix mode the optimum antenna config is to use two omni antennas, preferably identical antennas. Diversity mode an omni and a patch is a good combination.

Head orientation. I see this very frequently, especially with those who sit down when flying, and that’s to end up with your head looking at your feet. This will drastically reduce your range, especially that of the patch antenna.

They’re all Red Hot, of course.

Plenty of other stuff for me to look at there, though. Cheers

Seeing as hdzero went 30km with these, they’d be nice to try

There is a possibility that the receiver in your goggles might be faulty (deaf). If you get to fly with others using an analog receiver module you could try it in your Cobra X box goggle for a comparison.

Here is a good video…

You screw these into your lug-holes, right?
