Forget everything you know about a peaceful Sunday mow. A couple of weeks ago I went to the annual Heddington Steam Fair, and while the vintage traction engines were brilliant, it was the Lawn Mower Grand Prix that absolutely stole the show.
This isn’t just a one-off bit of weekend madness—it’s a round of the British Lawn Mower Racing Association (BLMRA) Championship! These drivers are touring the country all summer, fighting for crucial points in a highly competitive national league.
These absolute legends strip down everyday garden machinery, soup them up with powerful engines, and race them wheel-to-wheel at some nippy speeds. You expect a lawn mower to politely hum, but these beasts were roaring like dirt bikes!
The drivers were completely sending it around the tight bends—drifting on the grass, kicking up massive clouds of dust, and literally lifting wheels off the ground. They’re decked out in full motocross body armour and helmets, and after seeing them lean into the corners like they’re at Silverstone, I can see why. It’s the ultimate mix of serious engineering, high-octane adrenaline, and wonderfully eccentric British spirit. Who knew grass cutting could be a legitimate motorsport?
