Penistone UK - Horizontal or Vertical Crop?

Captured about sunrise NE of Penistone UK yesterday. This is one of just a few single-frame shots I captured, as most were panos.

I was really hoping to get some lighting spotlight on the patchwork fields on the hillside in the background, but it really never came to be.

Which crop do you prefer, please?

Landscape format for me

I prefer the wide angle as it shows more of the surroundings and has a greater capture of the sun (rise or set). Also spans the scene nicely not cutting off any detail.
Had the viaduct been a tower, then the bottom crop could have worked better.

Its will be a personal thing as everyone will have a reason for linking a particular photo orientation.

I agree with Rich… Landscape shows the context better… IMHO

The dominant feature of the picture is the long, horizontal viaduct in the middle foreground. That tends to suggest a landscape format crop.

And it is Landscape for me too. The foreground (in front of the viaduct) is not that interesting. You could also potentially crop a bit off the left and then you get a kind of zigzag line to the sunlit uplands! Well that is the sort of thing a camera club judge would say and I would agree with.

I also prefer the landscape version.

Normally I’d say I preferred landscape formats for panoramas, but in this case I think the bottom picture is better balanced, and makes the subject more prominent. Each to her own :woman_shrugging:t3:

I generally agree with those that prefer the landscape cropping. However, as I posted, ā€œI was really hoping to get some lighting spotlight on the patchwork fields on the hillside in the background, but it really never came to beā€ what drew me to this location was the patchwork fields on the hillside above the bridge. I waited and waited for the lighting to strike those fields in such a way that they’d pop and challenge the bridge for attention. Will have to try more.

Sorted!

Edit: Landscape on the original, by the way. The fields are still a quite prominent feature.

Hehe.

I have a lot to learn about post-processing. Having grown up with 35mm b&w film photography, I still lean toward capturing what I observe rather than altering it.
I’ll be back to that hillside to catch the sunlight.

All, I commented earlier in this thread…

Having thought about it some more, the one thing that hasn’t been mentioned was ā€˜What was the picture trying to achieve’?

What was going to the focal point of the picture? And by enhancing the rather nice looking patchwork fields un the background, does it deject from the Viaduct?

I’ve been taking pictures for years both on land, at sea and under water, I’ve always said " a picture is only a snapshot, until it’s presented" and I think that is still true…

Everyone will have different ideas as to what looks best etc, but with the question about what what is being presented more than one option/opinion is correct!
