Work trip to Wakefield yesterday, first time this year and was determined to get a few drone pics of the Cathedral.
Got a few from one spot(will post separate) and was about to move position when the Cannon of the Cathedral came by and started chatting, seemed interested in the drone. He asked, with some pride, if I had seen the nesting Peregrine Falcon?
He explained they have a nesting box on the tower with a live stream on YouTube.
I said if I had known I would not have flown, he was surprised as he said the bird is used to noise etc. I then said how the bird may think a flying drone was either a threat or a meal and how I would have no chance against the speed of attack from the falcon.
So I packed up, went back to the hotel and had a look on YouTube, that was it for the rest of the evening, compulsive viewing.
There is a young chick and a unhatched egg along with the coming and going of parent (only seen one so far)
There was one nesting on the top of Blackpool tower at the last meet we had there
It came out had a fly about and went back in
There is no evidence that drones disturb nesting birds, most wildlife documentaries use them
That’s good to know, makes sense thinking about wildlife programs.
We too have nesting peregrines at Derby Cathedral. Until they fly the nest I’m not flying anywhere near there. ![]()
Yep we have some in rochdale townhall as well new box after the restoration work
interesting that we cam, I’ve found myself drawn to it a few times.
seems there is no interest in that egg, I take it it’s not viable and it’s just looking after the chick?
I know little about birds
Just had a look now and the egg has gone, I read the mother will eat non viable eggs to get some energy back, not sure if that has happened here.
if you scroll back 10 hours the egg is there… then the webcam goes offline… and the egg has disappeared…
best be quick as I think there is only about 12 hours of rolling footage
