Do it, it’s beautiful there, strangely on Sunday it was 12mph wind inland where I live but 6mph at Portland bill.

I’m so excited to get down to Dorset, only there for 3 doors, reckon I’ll have enough video to keep me busy for a few weeks

Just a heads up for anyone thinking of flying in/on Portland. There is now a large RFZ for most of the island apart from approx Southwell out to the Bill. people have been (quite legally) flying over the Bibby Stockholm, this is now not allowed.
Also, all of the breakwater is included in the RFZ, as is the Sandsfoot area of Weymouth including Sandsfoot Castle.

The 400m from any prison has pretty much’d closed off a quarter of the island & now as you mention there are new restrictions around the harbour due to possible helicopters & nesting terns. Portland is now a bust. Fortunately I’d done the perimeter flight & harbour before the new rules were enacted. Advice to anyone thinking of coming dont bother !

Such a shame though isn’t it, it’s a beautiful place to fly and see things from above.
Even church ope is in the FRZ… WTF??
As you say, not worth the trip down here anymore.

Hello all,
Have just found this thread so apologies for the bump, but I just wanted to say Portland is very much open to drone flying despite the FRZ.
In order to do it, you will need a Permit from HeliOps who manage the FRZ and this can be applied for either directly through Drone Assist, (Altitude Angel/Drone Safety Map) or the HeliOps website from the homepage. Once you have set up the Drone assist account it’s actually no more difficult than raising a Flight Plan anywhere else.
HeliOps do ask for 48hrs notice where possible, though if you apply during their working hours (0800 Mon-1200 Fri, limited coverage 12-1600 Fri), then you’ll normally get a same day response.
If your flying is for recreation, then it is free.
Given the traffic flying in and through the Zone they will ask for details of TAOL locations as well.
It really is a fantastic place to fly in, please do not be out off by this necessary piece of admin.
