Portobello Beach Edinburgh Scotland m3p

Portobello is a popular sandy beach in the Edinburgh suburb by the same name, slightly less than 2 miles east of the city centre, offering views across to the north side of the Firth of Forth and out towards Inchkeith Island.

Being close to the city, it draws many summer visitors who flock here to swim, play in the waves and sunbathe. Kayaking and sailing are also popular here, with The Portobello Kayaking and Sailing Club based here, and beach volleyball games are often held next to the swimming club.

The beach is interspersed with a few wooden groynes, and it is directly accessed from a promenade which backs the beach. Along the promenade, which is a good place to stroll along, taking in the views, are a selection of cafes and bars. Further facilities such as shops and restaurants can be found a short walk away in the town of Portobello. Many of the buildings are Georgian or Victorian in character and form part of a Conservation Area, including Portobello Swim Centre, a Victorian indoor swimming pool right on the promenade.

The beach can be reached via a number of buses from Edinburgh city centre. Some roadside parking is available near the beach.
