As the forum is predominantly populated by members whom fly a DJI product I thought it might interest some if I share my experience of an alternative product, after six months of ownership, to include the good, the bad, and the down right ugly.
I picked up my PowerEgg X Wizard (Drone package plus waterproof kit) back in February of this year, shortly after its unveiling at this years CES in Las Vegas. Very quickly I came across my first stumbling block. I’m an Android user and the APP would not work with my Samsung S7, or anyone else’s Samsung device. Obviously Powervision had rushed the APP and only verified its performance with a limited number of handsets prior to its release. I was able to identify it was a compatibility issue with a graphics device used in some of Samsung’s handsets. Now my experience with Powervision’s European technical support has been nothing but exemplary. Within a few minutes of filing a ticket via their website I received a reply from a real person who actually knew the product and wasn’t working from a script. My findings were passed to the developers and though it took some time a fix was implemented in a future APP release. In the meantime I acquired a new handset, Huawei P30Lite that worked flawlessly with the APP.
How does it fly? In one word Awesomely! The precision of control and manoeuvrability is second to none. Most recently I flew it at my Club’s flying field where most members grounded themselves due to the 30knot gusts crosswinds. The PEX did not faultier in these harsh conditions.
The camera? This did not get off to a good start. Many users reported soft areas in the image and severe frame dropping when shooting at 4K and frame rates above 30fps. Again, as a credit to Powervisions tech team, this was addressed very quickly and resolved via a firmware update.
As well as being water proof the PEX can be used as a handheld AI-Camera. This is because of its modular design whereby the arms and rotors simply detach and a handle is slotted into the body of the drone. You then connect your mobile device to the camera via 5.8GHz WiFi to view the image and control the camera functions. This is a simple test clip shot at 1080p@60fps:
Now the downright ugly.
Within the last week I have been having a very frustrating time with PEX in Drone-Mode. With the arms attached the Android APP would only recognise AI-Camera Mode, the iOS APP would pop-up an alert claiming that one of the arm assemblies were not connected. Now the way the PEX recognises it is in Drone Mode is by two very small spring assisted pin contacts, that when shorted together signal Drone Mode. I’ve never been a fan of such things especially on contacts that are repeatedly taken apart and put back together again, such as repeatedly assembling and disassembling the drone, as this quickly weakens the springs resulting in failed contact points.
Yesterday I opened a new Support Ticket with Powervision detailing the fault and my findings. Again within a short space of time I had a response from their Tech Support. They informed me that it appeared I owned one of their first production runs and since then the arm assemblies had been modified. They further said that they were going to send out two new arm/motor assemblies. However shortly after this offer I received another message informing me they were going to recall the complete package and instead issue me with a complete new drone and waterproof kit, along with a special surprise (?), in leu of the inconvenience caused. I can’t grumble at that.
It has been a rocky road of an experience owning a PowerEgg X, with a few significant pitfalls. However when everything is working I still consider this package to be an excellent performer. More importantly Powervision appear to be very proactive in supporting their customers and rectifying issues without overburdening said customers with silly requests. I’m due to receive a prepaid priority DHL shipping label later today and receive the new and improved PEX by return, so I’m smiling again even without my medication
