Question to O4 & O4 Pro users - do they overheat easily?

This was touted in the reviews when launched but my early tests show that I can easily have the unit powered for a couple of mn (more than enough for a gps lock) before arming without pb - unit sets itself in ‘low power mode’ and picks up when arming straight away.

My tests are recent so not done anything in hot weather yet - and I am using the Auto setting for transmission power – What is your experience?

Interesting you ask this question. I haven’t got an answer, but since I am waiting for delivery of my BetaFPV Meteor 75 Pro O4, I am preparing myself already to learn the necessary steps to bind it to my Goggles N3. In one video, I noticed that a hairdryer type device is used to cool the Meteor unit down whilst making changes to Betaflight (?) settings. Therefore my question is similar. Do these units get (too) hot?

VTX’s always generate heat when powered up - so if you are to be any length of time (like doing a Betaflight upgrade/config/..) you want for sure to cool the unit.

Usually (with every non-DJI product I used) - it is so bad that you need to power down the VTX even to get a GPS lock (1mn-ish for the cold start). I have a HDZero whoop where the temp goes up 1 degree with every seconds once plugged in on min power

I’ve got a PRO unit in my Dolphin wing, It’s mounted on an aluminium plate at the front of the battery bay, it gets airflow through the hole in the nose and also has a small fan always running to move the air through the fuselage. Needless to say with this set-up it never gets hot

I’ve also got a PRO in my Chipoto, mounted behind the camera on the ‘designed for’ cradle. The Chipito is un-complicated so it gets launched quickly after power up (GPS is 2/3rds down and gets sats almost immediately) I’ve had no heating issues in normal use.

Also have a PRO unit in a Volador 5” Deadcat, it’s mounted in the usual place at back on lower carbon plate, it’s spaced off about 3mm so airflow is around all six faces of the VTX. An M10 GPS is up front and gets sats very quickly. Again I’ve had no heating issues in normal use.

Hope this helps somebody

I think the key is good airflow and get it in the air as quick as you can :+1:

Thanks Steve
I am trying to assert if I can get away without pit mode - building the KD5 and had to choose an unusual stack (Sequre) to fit within the 15mm deck - but it does not have a built-in pit mode. Looks like I will not bother with a Realpit and keep it simple (another win for DJI :flexed_biceps: )

I have a couple of O4 lite’s and an O4 Pro.

The O4 lite’s do over heat quickly when I’m tinkering with the drone settings (beta flight) at the computer at home, however I have a small USB powered computer fan, which prevents it.

Similar to this -

I’ve not had that problem with the O4 Pro though.

There’s several aluminium CNC cases available for the O4 lite, that increase the heat dissipation which extends the time before it over heats.

Ian @ Madstech tested one and it seemed to work.

I have one knocking about at home, but never got around to fitting it

My O4 Pro on the Pavo20 seems to be fine for a minute or two. Does get hot but not overheating.

More than enough for a battery then in knobhead mode ;o)
