Radio controller, which one would you buy and why

this is a bit of a shooting the breeze question…

in Nov/ Dec 2023,

which RC would you buy for a quad or fixed wing?

ERLS seems to be the transmission protocol of choice for range and penetration?

and the radio master boxer (us$139.99 / ~£139.99) seems to be a default choice… but then there is the radio master zorro (us$119.99 / ~£119.99)

and then I know a few of you have the radio master tx16 (us$199.99 / ~£174.99)

there is the jumper pro V2 (~£78.60)

why would you choose one over the other?

I’ve been quite happy with my DJI fpv controller for the Avata and FPV (or at least that style of controller)

given I’m intending to use the controller purely for FPV I won’t be looking down at a screen on the controller so the big colour display of the tx16s is probably not going to be of benefit

what are your thoughts and what helped you decide on which one to choose and which to avoid and why?

Depends on your budget of course…

TX - IMO the Boxer is the current best buy and highly capable
PROTOCOL - Crossfire is easier to set up and over the years has proved to be incredibly reliable, it’s recent supply issues seem to be resolved and most vendors have stock now. ELRS whilst newer is getting a reputation for good relability BUT it needs more care in setting up and more computer skills and more time. It is however much cheaper than CSFR. Nothing else to consider in 2023, CSFR or ELRS only

Size I guess is the thing to consider for your needs and transport. Never regret the TX16S (as it’s got loads of switches, useful more got.more.into planes, however the boxer and other alternatives have enough these days) and not interested in changing. It’s large but very feature rich and love the screen.

I’d probably buy a boxer if starting out today, and yes ELRS or crossfire only protocols to consider. I’d pick ELRS personally, but hey ho plenty of ELRS Vs CSFR rants out there heh.

I pick radio master or happy model ELRS RXs, and never had an issue.

If you can try and hold a radio and meet someone that’s probably the best.

Oh and Zorro has battery life issues, small batteries. Physically good and capable radio, let down by running out of battery heh

thanks, perfect just what I needed to know,

That’s why I didn’t recommend it
I have one, but would not buy again

My fave is the jumper t lite. Small, inexpensive and with enough battery power.

Though I’m upgrading to the jumper t20 at xmas.

I also have this controller, actually easy to setup.

Pros: cheap, elrs, gamepad style. Works as usb joystick and bluetooth
Cons: need to adjust trim on every power up (is this usual?). Sticks are short … Solve by adding 3d printed sticks. No each strap hook.

Never had this issue.

I added a 3d printed one.

what about. ^^^^

any negatives?

need to do a button or switch count.

the tx16s does not have much more of a price difference at the moment in GBP… (than the boxer)

I’m not going for the CNC gimbal and go faster stripes with bardwell colour scheme exclusive bling option …

I tried to make one (3d printed) but the screw in was porblematic - could I plagiarise your model ?

This one. Printed in TPU.

I never liked the look of the jumper t pro. I much prefer the metal toggle switches of the lite to the plastic buttons on the t pro.

Ta. My Google skills need polishing
Never thought of attaching it that way.

Playing with stick height at the moment

I paid about 160.i think for mine plus the ELRS module but that was a few years back now. Wouldn’t swap it, though consider the pocket for whoops heh. Main downside I guess big.

I’ve not used many others, though the Zorro felt nice in hand and a lot of people like smaller game pad ones.

Feel.in hand and weight is a personal preference really.

You’ve flown a plane with mine haven’t you?!

I started with a Taranis X9D and when it came to put it out to pasture the RM TX16S was the logical replacement for me. I paid £125 for it from UMT.

I replaced the stock Hal effect gimbals with the AG1’s, along with some of the switches when they broke. The big benefit, for me at least, is the colour screen, which when using the Yaapu scripts for Ardupilot mean many of the functions of a separate Mavlink capable Groundstation are taken care of. Now that it’s running EdgeTX means programming has been simplified with the activation of the touchscreen. I’m not running ELRS, yet, as I was an early adopter of IRC Ghost as at the time it seemed the logical change from the IRC EzUHF system I’d been running for long range.

I think the only reason I would send my TX16S to the same farm as my Taranis X9D would be if Radiomaster were to release a similarly capable radio with a top mounted fully functioning colour/touch screen.
