RC-N1 trouble - no power

Hi there, and I hope someone can help me here.
I was planning to fly tomorrow so checked over my kit; Mini2 with RC-N1 controller. The battery level was low on the controller so I put it on charge. The row of lights were running across so I left it to charge. Checked after about one hour and everything still looked good. Came back to it a bit later and all the lights were off. I unplugged the charger and tried to power the controller on but it seems to be dead now.
I have plugged it into a different charger, just in case, but no lights.

Any ideas?

If the charger and cable are ok then the problem is more than likely an issue with the internal battery or the BMS

Thank you for your quick response. My guess was that the battery had given up.
I am confident with dismantling small electronic devices, replacing phone batteries and screens etc. Is it feasible to replace the battery, if that is the problem?

There is a YTube video which may give you some idea on the complexity of replacing them.

Unless the battery is a common type, it’ll be unique to this controller and (being DJI) probably intelligent, therefore not eay to source and expensive. it’ll prolly be cheaper to replace the controller with an eBay one; they seem to go for betwwn £30-£70. The previous controller now becomes landfill, not very ecologically sound but what can you do?

possibly or like I said the BMS, is worth checking the batteries first with a meter

I might try that since I now have two dead rc n1’s. What could possibly go wrong! I take it the gloopy stuff is flux? and it is cleaned off with alcohol?

Thank you for all your suggestions, I will follow Sparky’s advice and take the controller apart this evening and put a meter across the battery, as a starting point.
I will update this thread with my findings.

It looks like some kind of silicone sealer to prevent connectors coming loose. It should (!) come away dry (without solvent) and (unlike the first video) I would replace it before closing up the case.

Well, having followed the video that SparkyFPV linked to I can confirm that the batteries are fine at 3.48volts each.
Having removed the circuit board and taken off the chip covers I can see that the chip the guy in the vid replaces is about 5mm square! Despite having done many repairs to mobile phones, tablets, PCs etc, I had to concede that with my 65 year old eyes, and lack of specialist soldering/heat gun kit, I have taken the easy way out and ordered a replacement controller.
I would like to have been able to post an amazingly impressive repair job, but reality kicked in and I just want to get flying again.

… when it arrives it may be worth having a go at the repair on the original - nothing to lose and you may end up with a working spare that could be sold to cover the cost and post an amazing impressive repair job :man_shrugging: :smiley:

I am still contemplating the repair, but to acquire the additional tools that I would need would cost more than the value of the repaired controller - assuming I was even successful.

Still, a challenge can never be ignored :thinking:

My replacement controller arrived today, all looking good for a flight on Friday :crossed_fingers:
