Renfrew Bridge closing behind the PS Waverley

Another clip from my day chasing the Waverley last week.

Had permission from Glasgow ATC for an hour of flying so I arrived nice and early to get my bearings. Couple of trial flights along the river and I had the plan: hover above the river’s edge 100m downstream until she’d passed and then come in behind her, follow through the bridge in cine mode until I fell behind, then smoothly reverse to capture the bridge closing. Forwards, backwards, no turns, no gimbal tilt.

As you can see, that’s not what happened :grimacing:

I knew what time she departed from the docks at the Science Centre so guestimated what time she’d be passing. Then waited. And waited… and waited.

Started to get a bit twitchy on the battery. Still plenty (>75%), but it was dropping by the minute and no boat in sight as far as the nearest bend. So when I heard a steam whistle that sounded a good distance away I thought I had plenty of time to swap the battery.

I landed and pulled the old battery. And that’s when the top of a funnel appeared over the top of the nearest building. Battery rammed back in and, thankfully, not one of those times it takes me three attempts to get the timing right for powering on.

So instead of a nice cruise along behind the ship in cine mode, the start of this is me at full pelt in normal mode, trying to avoid the bridge whilst keeping the Waverley in shot as I tilt, pan and slide to get in behind. It’s really just luck that I remembered to hit record! :man_facepalming:

Not the shot I wanted, but at least I’ve got a pre-planned plan for later in the year when I’ll definitely be going back to try again.

And next time, I’ll go armed with this:
