I remember hearing its distinctive foghorn when I was younger
@MartG1960 …still sounds on special occasions fetes event days etc
Finally got out to take some images yesterday for this challenge. First is Clifton suspension bridge taken with MM, the bridge spans the Avon gorge in Bristol. Initially designed by Brunel but not completed until 1864, 6 years after Brunel’s death.
Another from yesterdays trip to Bristol with the MM. This is SS Great Britain, transatlantic passenger steamer, once the longest ship in the world from 1845 to 1854, designed by Brunel with a very interesting history if you have the time to read it
Harringworth Viaduct
Taken today 11/12/2021 with DJI M2 @ 08:15 in Panoramic mode
Construction
In the late 1870s, the Midland Railway commenced construction of the 17-mile line between Kettering in Northamptonshire and Manton, Rutland.
The valley of the River Welland was a major geographical obstacle along the selected route for the line requiring the construction of a lengthy viaduct
In 1874, an Act of Parliament was passed, authorising the line’s construction. A contract for the construction of the viaduct was tendered to London based firm Lucas and Aird was awarded prime contractor status
In March 1876, the first brick of the viaduct was laid; the first arch was completed during June 1877 and all 82 of the viaduct’s arches were completed within 13 months
Now is your chance to vote for some, all, one or none of the pictures in our quest to find a winner. And you only have until 23:00 on Monday 13th to do so - so make your choices bow! If you want to see the full-size image click the pic to be taken to it.
Slapped wrist to us for not announcing the winners earlier. Our only excuse is that we have been busy with Christmas preparations and forgot the time
So, @DeanoG60 is a worthy winner with his great picture of a local (to him) landmark, the impressive Bedworth Water Tower.
Our favourite Victorian engineer was celebrated by @RichGBiscuit with his picture of I.K. Brunel’s fine bridge over the Clifton Gorge, the photo took second place
Third was @john768 with his local landmark, the lovely brick red Grimsby Dock Tower. If any of the original hydraulic mechanisms survive we would love to see some pictures from inside the tower.
Just behind the winners we had a three way tie for 4th place, another example of Brunel’s over-reaching genius with the SS Great Britain, @RichGBiscuit 's second entry, @TallTakes 's view of Titus Salt’s vision of an idyllic place to work, Saltaire, and our first entrant into this round of the competiton, @msgyorkie with his early Victoriian Ouse railway bridge.
Well done to all who produced such great pictures in some adverse weather conditions!
Congratulations @DeanoG60 a great shot

Thanks to @Challenges_Committee for their hard work. It really does provide a good incentive to get and try something new so is much appreciated. Well done to the other entrants in pretty crappy weather for most

Congratulations to @DeanoG60 for the deserved win and also to the runners up. Thanks also to the entrants and @Challenges_Committee for making all this possible. Have a great Christmas everyone

Aye its a bit of a mare at this time of the year.
@Challenges_Committee When does the RTF Winners gallery get updated? ![]()
Textbook down the back of the trousers, folks. Chalcom are replying 🏃♂️💨
Hi Deano. It gets updated on an irregular basis. The staffer responsible for the somewhat overblown prose that accompanies the winners’ pictures is also involved in taking the trophies and silverware to the specialists for cleaning, a task he has been involved in for the past few weeks. Although we haven’t spoken for a while he has sent us all a very nice postcard of a palm tree lined, white coral sand beach.
We expect him back before the New Year …
