RTF Drone Photo Challenge July 6th to 19th - Summer and/or Industry - Vote for the Winners

You have decided. But the poll software isn’t very smart.so it shows Summer - 9votes - as 35% and Industry - 9 votes - as 34% (Gardens had 8 votes, 31%)

ChallCom have exercised their right to interfere and have declared the subjects for this round to be Summer and/or Industry

In the immortal words of the Pub Landlord, “Where would we be without rules?” * So, to avoid any unpleasantness, here they are:

RULES

The requirement is to submit a single still image created using a drone to illustrate the subject of the competition. This round will run from 00:01 Sunday 6th July until 23:00 Saturday July 19th; the subject is Industry and/or Summer

The image must be captured while the competition is open. It is a Reason To Fly Challenge so please show that the image is created by a flying camera!

Editing is confined to colour and exposure adjustments and crop only. There must be no removal or pasting of an object. Stacked images, HDR images and non-spherical panoramas are considered single images for the purposes of this competition.

Images must be posted with the following information as a minimum:

In Capitals as the first line of your post:

THIS IS MY ENTRY

If this is not done at the time of posting the picture will be ignored. Should it be necessary to change your picture then delete the previous picture and add “This is my entry” - as above - as the first line of your new post. If in any doubt contact the Challenges Committee
(@Challenges_Committee)

Further Information is required

  • Location
  • Time and date
  • Aircraft/camera used
  • Feel free to add any further information that you think will be of interest

Voting

The members of GADC will judge images. They may vote for any number of pictures through an anonymous poll open for two days after the closing date for competition entries.

Voting in the poll is open to all GADC members, whether they have entered the competition or not.

The Challenge Committee may request the original media in case of a dispute.

Schedule

The competition subject will be announced every second Saturday around 22:30. The subject will be chosen by a poll of GADC members selecting from three that have been picked at random from the subject list. You may make additions to the list at any time.

The competition will run from Sunday 00.01 to Saturday 23.00 fourteen days later. Voting by poll will be open for a further two days until Monday 22:00

The winner (and second and third-placed competitors if there are sufficient entries) will be announced shortly after the vote is closed

Have Fun! Be Safe!

All flights are the sole responsibility of the individual conducting them. Each competitor must abide by the drone code and adhere to the limitations and restrictions imposed upon them by aviation law, the aircraft being used and the qualifications they hold. * France! And where would we be if we had too many rules? Germany! If a flight is undertaken in a restricted zone proof of permission having been granted is required.

This modest looking building is an unlikely star of the industrial age. It was built a very long time ago in 1719. It housed a “Newcomen atmospheric steam engine” whatever that was. But its job was to pump water out of Number 2 Auchenharvie coal pit. The very first engine made by Thomas Newcomen was installed at Dudley Castle, Staffordshire in 1712. This B listed engine house now has pride of place beside the third green on Auchenharvie Golf Course, which was opened 1981.

Summer on Ayr Beach… with a (very) tenuous link to industry by noting that much of the character of the seafront in Ayr is down to the town’s popularity as a holiday destination during the Industrial Revolution.

I found this photo of the beach from 100 years ago… not a lot has changed (except, I imagine that it didn’t smell quite so strongly of cannabis in 1920!)

Blackpool Promenade

The tourist industry is alive and kicking in Blackpool, the epitome of a “Northern” working class family, summer seaside holiday destination.

There is something for everyone, and having lots of indoor attractions it is an all weather destination, just as well as until recent times a British summer was often warm and wet with the odd bit of sunshine thrown in. This photo a typical example, taken early morning as the cleanup crews are finishing and the commuters are heading off to work it was just starting to drizzle.

In the photo we can see as well as some of the 7 mile stretch of golden sands, all 3 piers, The Tower, Coral Island, The Golden Mile, Sea Life Centre, Madam Tussauds, The Sandcastle and the Pleasure Beach.

My aim had been to take a picture of a cricket match, but in the spirit of the British summer, torrential rain in the morning meant no play. So here is a semi abstract shot of the pitch.

Two third places this time around, both if we may say so are similar, views of the agricultural landscape. Firstly from Patrick @Nikonitis with a harvest in progress at Farley Farm near Farley Mount in Hampshire. Farmers always seem to be pessimistic but the weather this year has been even unkinder than last, yields are expected to be low in both quality and quantity

Our second third place went to Diane @Osdog who our fading memory tells us is a relative newcomer to this Challenge; let’s hope the golden fields of the Lincolnshire Wolds produce a rather better crop than our dismal forecast!

Second place goes to Paul @Alderley_aerial with a shot of the crowd attending the Black Keys concert as part of their “No Rain, No Flowers Tour>” at Manchester’s Castlefield Bowl outdoor venue

The winner is an industrial shot first, taken in early morning summer sunshine so it could be said to combine both themes of this round of RTF. Mark @akey_uk is another newcomer to the Challenge and has captured an image of the headstocks and engine room at Pleasley Colliery near Mansfield. The pit, which closed nearly 40 years ago, has been repurposed as a mining museum, country park and nature reserve. Details are here.

Thank you to all who took part, thank you to all who voted (always more voting than taking pictures!) and congratulations to Patrick and Diane, to Paul and to our overall winner, Mark.
