RTF Drone Photo Challenge October 11th - 24th - Mills

The subject that you have chosen for this round is:

and to clarify - Betram Mills, Mrs. Mills, Juliet Mills, all mills are ok - as long as you use a drone to photograph them

And - for those who want to do this right:

RULES

The requirement is to submit a single still image created using a drone to illustrate the subject of the competition. This round will run from 00:01 Sunday October 11th to 23:00 Saturday October 24th 2026; the subject is Mills

The image must be captured while the competition is open. It is a Reason To Fly Challenge so please show that the image is created by a flying camera!

Editing is confined to colour and exposure adjustments and crop only. There must be no removal or pasting of an object. Stacked images, HDR images and non-spherical panoramas are considered single images for the purposes of this competition.

Images must be posted with the following information as a minimum:

In Capitals as the first line of your post:

THIS IS MY ENTRY

If this is not done at the time of posting the picture will be ignored. Should it be necessary to change your picture then delete the previous picture and add “This is my entry” - as above - as the first line of your new post. If in any doubt contact the Challenges Committee
(@Challenges_Committee)

Further Information is required

  • Location
  • Time and date
  • Aircraft/camera used
  • Feel free to add any further information that you think will be of interest

Voting

The members of GADC will judge images. They may vote for any number of pictures through an anonymous poll open for two days after the closing date for competition entries.

Voting in the poll is open to all GADC members, whether they have entered the competition or not.

The Challenge Committee may request the original media in case of a dispute.

Schedule

The competition subject will be announced every second Saturday around 22:30. The subject will be chosen by a poll of GADC members selecting from three that have been picked at random from the subject list. You may make additions to the list at any time.

The competition will run from Sunday 00.01 to Saturday 23.00 fourteen days later. Voting by poll will be open for a further two days until Monday 22:00

The winner (and second and third-placed competitors if there are sufficient entries) will be announced shortly after the vote is closed

Have Fun! Be Safe!

All flights are the sole responsibility of the individual conducting them. Each competitor must abide by the drone code and adhere to the limitations and restrictions imposed upon them by aviation law, the aircraft being used and the qualifications they hold. If you have read this far you were probably expecting a quirky aphorism cunningly inserted in the text. Sorry to disappoint. If a flight is undertaken in a restricted zone proof of permission having been granted is required.

Didn’t we do mills not so long back

I was just thinking the same.

@Jabtas, @Drumsagard

Tim, John:

You had three choices for the subject of this round, as always.

The subjects were picked at random. Waterfalls was also a subject about a year or so back, Ferris wheels hasn’t been a subject before.

But 57% of the voters decided that Mills are what you want to photogaph (which, as the graphic above shows, is a very broad subject)

Of course had the subject been “Industrial Buildings” we would be innundated with images of …
.
.
.

.
Mills!

Are wind turbines included in this ?

As we always say, you guys chose the subject, you guys will be voting for a winner, it’s YOUR decision as to whether others will vote a picture of a turbine or a wind farm to be a winner.

We just do the admin

THIS IS MY ENTRY

Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire

11.10.26, 4.30pm

DJI Mini 4 Pro

This is Stoneyholm Mill in Kilbirnie. Given the hippy theme in the illustrations for this challenge, I think this mill should win on name alone.
It was built in 1831 and was occupied by W & J Knox (founded 1778) from 1864 till 2014. It was used for spinning flax, linen thread and over time, transitioned into producing twine and fishing nets. W & J Knox is still operating today, from the large light blue building that you can see behind. The old building is the focus of an enthusiastic local regeneration plan run by a dedicated trust determined to save an important part of Kilbirnie’s industrial heritage. Upcoming highlights – a spooky halloween film in the old building in aid of funds!

Sitting just outside the North Notts village of North Leverton and Habblesthorpe, a unique windmill that has never stopped milling. It regularly grinds flour and animal feeds. Built-in 1813 by a group of local farmers, North Leverton Windmill is over 200 years old. A focal point for the local community hosting events and family fun days.

Usk, Monmouthshire

DJI Air 3S

Built around 1813, Llancayo Windmill is one of Wales’ largest surviving windmill towers. It was used to grind wheat until a fire around 1825 left it derelict for more than 160 years. Now Grade II listed, the five-storey tower has been restored, with working sails, as distinctive holiday accommodation in the Usk Valley.

What can I say? It’s on my doorstep and I’m always watching conditions to see if I can catch something unique. I’d set off to be there pre sunrise but collided with a large doe deer, which became entangled inside the nose of the car, so much so I was in a bit of a panic because it was still alive. It was dark and on a small rural lane, so I was a bit of a hazard. It was fairly early and Nobody stopped to help, so I called the police and they attended really quickly. Sadly, the deer died before they arrived. I’ve drivien all over the world and in 45 years this was a first for me. The incident put me in a somber mood and to compound that I’d missed the best of the light but did what I could. :face_holding_back_tears:
