Yeah this Sunday if the weather is decent I may go to the Tall Chimney Pub and get some photos - Swad is full of Chimneys from all the pottery places around here - I can think of 4 or 5 that could get something interesting ( some are not that tall though haha )

Then there is Willington Power Station too - so will reach out to the aerodrome that has a bit of a zone that hit some of the area to get clearance too.

So spoilt for choice really - just need the weather to play ball for me

That’s the one I couldn’t think of the name of it,
We used to have Didcot power station in the south but it got decommissioned & ripped down, has ruined the skyline out that neck of the woods shame really :slightly_smiling_face:

The Tall Chimney Pub - Swadlincote
4th October 2026 - 06:58 ( Just in time for sunrise )
Drone - Air 3s

Before becoming a pub, the site of the Tall Chimney was part of a major local pottery and pipe-manufacturing facility known over the years as Wragg’s Pipeworks and later Hepworths Pipeworks

History of the Structure

  • Origins: The wider factory site actually began as a firebrick works back in 1790. Under James Woodward in the 1840s, it transitioned into a highly successful sewage pipe and drainage factory, exporting sanitary ware worldwide. [1, 2]
  • The Chimney: The iconic 164-foot (50-metre) brick chimney was built in 1910 to service the expanding kilns when the site was operated by Thomas Wragg & Sons (Wragg’s Pipeworks). [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Later Years: The works were taken over, rebuilt, and modernised by Hepworth Building Products in 1978. [1, 2]

When the industrial works eventually closed, the historic chimney faced demolition in the 1980s. However, an intense local petition saved it, resulting in the structure receiving Grade II listed status.

Bugger it, the location of the chimney I was about to invade this afternoon is in a prison FRZ :sad_but_relieved_face:

Cheers

Up to 28 days to obtain permission; I’d better look elsewhere.

The Devil’s Chimney, Cheltenham

Not even sure if this actually qualifies as a chimney of even tall. Feel free to remove it if not.

The Devils’s Chimney is largely a man-made pillar left behind by 18th-century quarry workers when an incline was cut into the hillside.

Folklore claims the pillar was built by the Devil to sit upon and throw stones at churchgoers. Makes you wonder why it’s called a chimney and not chair :man_shrugging:

Please do so if you wish, but there are other choices nearby, such as Northwick Park Hospital incinerator chimney.

“Carlsberg Brewery in Northampton started brewing in 1973. Inspired by a Danish longship, the building was the vision of Danish architect Knud Munk, for which he received the prestigious Financial Times’ Industrial Architecture Prize.”

It produces approximately 2 million pints a day, and is estimated to have produced about 28 BILLION pints since it opened!! :beer_mug: :clinking_beer_mugs:

A trip to kill two birds with one stone, grab a shot of a tall chimney and visit Cowmans Butchers for some of their famous sausages.
