RTF Photo Challenge September 14th to 27th 2025 - Nature - Winners Announced

Your subject for the 2025-26 RTF Season opener is Nature

In the immortal words of the Pub Landlord, “Where would we be without rules?” * So, to avoid any unpleasantness, here they are:

RULES

The requirement is to submit a single still image created using a drone to illustrate the subject of the competition. This round will run from 00:01 Sunday 14th September until 23:00 Saturday September 27th; the subject is Nature

The image must be captured while the competition is open. It is a Reason To Fly Challenge so please show that the image is created by a flying camera!

Editing is confined to colour and exposure adjustments and crop only. There must be no removal or pasting of an object. Stacked images, HDR images and non-spherical panoramas are considered single images for the purposes of this competition.

Images must be posted with the following information as a minimum:

In Capitals as the first line of your post:

THIS IS MY ENTRY

If this is not done at the time of posting the picture will be ignored. Should it be necessary to change your picture then delete the previous picture and add “This is my entry” - as above - as the first line of your new post. If in any doubt contact the Challenges Committee
(@Challenges_Committee)

Further Information is required

  • Location
  • Time and date
  • Aircraft/camera used
  • Feel free to add any further information that you think will be of interest

In light of the expected weather for the next two weeks we will also accept pictures from ground-based cameras. Please continue to mark your picture with the type of drone or camera used

Voting

The members of GADC will judge images. They may vote for any number of pictures through an anonymous poll open for two days after the closing date for competition entries.

Voting in the poll is open to all GADC members, whether they have entered the competition or not.

The Challenge Committee may request the original media in case of a dispute.

Schedule

The competition subject will be announced every second Saturday around 22:30. The subject will be chosen by a poll of GADC members selecting from three that have been picked at random from the subject list. You may make additions to the list at any time.

The competition will run from Sunday 00.01 to Saturday 23.00 fourteen days later. Voting by poll will be open for a further two days until Monday 22:00

The winner (and second and third-placed competitors if there are sufficient entries) will be announced shortly after the vote is closed

Have Fun! Be Safe!

All flights are the sole responsibility of the individual conducting them. Each competitor must abide by the drone code and adhere to the limitations and restrictions imposed upon them by aviation law, the aircraft being used and the qualifications they hold. * France! And where would we be if we had too many rules? Germany! If a flight is undertaken in a restricted zone proof of permission having been granted is required.

Hang on! Is it Nature. Or Nature , Colour, Piers?

Hang on yourself! I’m juggling RTF, Birthday Challengs and BC photo threads so give me a minute to make the body match the illustration and the title!

But… France?

Do we also need to mention Germany? “Don’t mention the war”. “think I got away with it”.

Being new to these Challenges, I am going to see what the first few entries are as Nature is quite a broad topic that I can’t think where to start.
Rain maybe?
I liked the Birthday challenge system of “go find a yellow telehandler” - I knew where I stood on that one. Despite only photographing a red telehandler…

Honestly, it’s whatever you want it to be. One of the best things with the RTF challenges is seeing an entry that comes completely out of left field and would’t have occurred to you.

At the end of the day, it’s all a bit of fun and is exactly what it says on the tin: a Reason To Fly.

If you think your subject fits the brief then it fits the brief… that’s all that matters really  :+1:

This is very much a members’ competition, Ian.

ChallCom provide the Randomizer™ that selects three suggestions at random that have been provided by the members. Your image is judged by fellow competitors and GADC members - a jury of your peers.

Nature is a broad subject and very much open to interpretation. In RTF Challenges there is seldom a specific object to find, the emphasis is on posting a photograph that impresses others,

Take a variety of pictures as and when the weather allows, post the one you like most in this thread and see what happens

That is a good tactic for sure. Especially as it will get me out many times.

I agree wholeheartedly.

And I am especially looking forward to seeing everyones submissions because there is such a huge amount of talent here.

Probably best to avoid “naturists” though. Wouldn’t want the RTF to become NSFW…

To Ian and to everyone else - It may be a tad difficult to see everyone’s submissions due to a major, uncontrollable factor.

We have been trying to arrange a local meetup - just five or six pilots at a site with interesting photo opportunities and food and toilets not too distant. But we have checked the next ten days with various weather apps and, in desperation, consulted a meteorologist.

Their considered opinion of the weather for the next two weeks? “Shite!”

So we are invoking rule 43.

Although we would love to see aerial pictures on the theme of Nature we realise that it may not be possible or safe to fly. So for this round of RTF only we are happy to accept images created by drone, phone, mirrorless, DSLR or any camera that can take a picture.

If it is a non-drone picture the same rules apply, we want to know which camera created it :camera:

So it’s no longer an RTF challenge ?

It is an RTF Challenge but having looked at the 2-week forecast for our particular area in some detail on several weather sites it seems that flying may well be difficult.

In the interests of fairness for those that like creating we felt that people who can only fly outside of working hours shouldn’t be disadvantaged when flyable weather is unlikely most of the time and, at the moment looks to be bad next weekend.

So we have, for this round only, allowed terrestrial photography as well as an option No one is forcing you to use a non-drone camera, The club members who vote for the best pictures may well show a bias toward pictures taken by drone but the likelihood is that drone flights will be few over the next couple of weeks.

It just seems a shame that those who took part in the Birthday Challenge and enjoyed themselves extending their capabilities should be denied the opportunity to continue enjoying their creativity because the weather is unruly.

Hence invoking Rule 43

Fingers crossed the 10 day flying forecast isn’t too far out for Morecambe

Just back from capturing my Rule 43 banker, but still hoping to get flying in the next two weeks to find a better subject

Resisted the temptation to take the drone out yesterday on the Prom to capture the wild weather😎.
