Second attempt at following a car and first attempt at video editing

Second attempt at following our car as my wife drove, because on the first attempt I forgot to press ‘record’ button DUH! New to drones so still making silly mistakes like this. I know the video is a little too long, I haven’t learnt how to edit the audio so make the vid fit the music. This is my first ever video edit, so go easy on me…

Thanks!

Good effort, I’d say. Don’t do yourself down, every day is a school day!! I’m a bit of a newbie as well and I’m finding that music choice really makes a big difference to the energy of the visual.

well done

That’s great! Some decent flying and editing going on there! :+1::+1::+1:

@Andrei1103 this is another great “first” video - I am seeing loads of first attempts lately in here that look pretty good to me. Presume you had practiced some of the shots prior as some of those movements and pans can’t have been first attempts? I found that tracking a moving object (my dog running around a football field) gave me the best learning material in terms of drone control, as you are having to react and think quickly across three separate control inputs (excluding zoom). You are clearly proficient at following cars so excellent effort.

In terms of music, where are you sourcing the audio and what help do you need to make it fit? That track is pacy and dynamic so will be tricky to align to your footage - but as @Nikonitis says above audio in my opinion is the most essential aspect of any video. I literally do all my movies solely because of the music / soundtrack - without this aspect I wouldn’t even be on this forum.

If it is of any interest, I am happy to grab your video and overlay a different sound track for you so you can see how it impacts the footage? What is it you are looking for in terms of making it fit?

@Andrei1103 just as an example, Iposted a video further down this category (St Michael - “The Retake”) - I tend to cut and fit certain clips in sequence to how the music changes phase. The most obvious point in that video is the change at 3:23. You can’t always follow the entire phrasing of a track, but using key ones can really influence the final video impact. All IMHO anyway I have only been here a few months!

Thank you for such detailed response.

I got (myself) the mini4pro for Christmas and had a few practice flights whilst we were out and about on our holiday in Wales. I did a few different active tracking flights during our hikes in the mountains and a variation of tracking whilst manual flying and so on. This really was my second car tracking… However, I play video games and really into driving cars (not that you can tell by the type of the car my wife drives…) so I would say I’m pretty good at coordination. I’ve also watched a ton of YouTube videos on how to use the drone and which cinematic shots to use, so I’ve just tried to replicate what I learnt. There was a lot of choppy footage that I had to disregard also so what you see there is pretty much all that could be considered ‘usable’.

I must give the drone itself a lot of credit as it tracked the car incredibly well considering there was not much contrast in colours etc - so all I had to do was fly the drone to keep up with the car.

I’d say editing is what made the video (and sound)… One of the pan shots was when the drone lost the car and I had to try find it on the controller screen - but it turned out to look like an intentional movement

I am defintely enjoying filming the moving objects more than just landscapes vids… I need to make a video edit of the whole trip we did to Wales - but there is so much footage that I don’t even know where to start. Which is why I decided just to do the car tracking run - it’s one ‘mood’, one colour correction, one audio track etc etc

I used a sound track from Adobe stock, but since signed up to Audiio because one of the YouTubers has 70% off for first year making it incredibly good value. Feel free to overlay with another track, but I’m thinking of re-working the video anyway to make it shorter and use some new skills I learnt in video editing since making that film.

That all makes perfect sense. Were you using a tracker mode so it did it automatically or did you do it all manually? Either way doesn’t really matter - the most important thing you have done is scrutinise then extract the decent bits, and put them together in a way that flows with the subject. So this is why it is a good video. Not sure what the bit towards the end was where there is a bit of jostling behind the car, however you could stabilize that within the editing software potentially, if you wanted it perfect.

I don’t have tracking on the Mini 3 but I don’t use any feature other than manual controls for all my stuff. I don’t even use lines or grids. I do disregard a lot of my footage, a good piece of advice I got off here was record everything (1 long video) that way you have one clip to work with and dissect later.

Re so much footage and starting - what software are you using? If you load it into the editor it should generally appear in order, so you can scrub through and collate. One thing about Da Vinci that I absolutely love is the fact you can play a clip in the window and just mark In / Out on the clip timeline as much as you want, then drag things down to the main timeline. I only ever need to watch each clip once, and I can generate all useable material very quickly using this method. Then I can order it, trim it etc and if needs be adjust to the music phasing.

Thank you for all the advice - a lot to learn!

I had the drone set to track the car - but not active track… which means it keeps the subject centred on the screen (or off centre if you tell it to). So I still had to do all the flying manually, but the drone kept aiming at the car for me which made it much easier so I could focus on flying and thinking about composition. One advice I took from one YouTuber is that it’s ok to use as much software/hardware help as possible in order to concentrate on the composition and the content overall.

It was very windy and especially so when I flew behind the car close by. The turbulence was pretty crazy, but I really liked that bit of video so included in the edit regardless. I tried stabilising that bit in Premier Pro, but the result was terrible so I just left it as is…

I had Premier Pro as part of Abobe package when they did 50% off so purchased it through work as I need to use PS and Illustrator for work. But, since moved to Davinci Resolve so going to play around with that.

Me and you are going to have a falling out. Get those turned on as they help greatly when composing shots.

No fighting please

I use all the gridlines. I’ve done a little bit of amateur photography some years ago, so understand rule of third and importance of composition (although a lot more to think about in video). But I still use the gridlines, sometimes it just reminds me to keep to those important rules…

lol - funny you say that as I did turn them on this week, and wonder whether I should start using them. I am happy to do so, just haven’t so far.

I am just about to share a new video in this forum, which is a very special one to me and one that I have worked hard to get right. Talking of music and phasing, that is he overriding thing that I have prioritised in this video.

Bear in mind I have come into all this with zero experience, but I am spending huge amounts of time on it. Always happy to take advice!

One thing I’d like to add to all of the above… I would like to have some sort of style which I can keep to. I would really like to be making a faster paced, more dynamic footage with maybe an occasional chill vids. I am really looking forward to this journey, I just need to make time for it (having kids and a busy job makes it hard). Maybe I can get my kids involved somehow.

Where are you based? Sounds like you are embarking on a similar journey to me. If you are nearby would be good to hook up and share ideas. I am getting success now on social media and being contacted for local work, I am hoping to make something small out of my hobby long term if possible.

I am in Canterbury, Kent.

That’s great to be monetising your hobby… I’m pretty sure I’m a long way away from it  To be honest if it’s just a couple of quid here and there, I’m most likely just to keep it as a hobby and get my kids into it a bit. Broaden their horizons so to speak…
