Significant grain at night? DJI Flip

How would I solve the graininess at night and slightly low resolution image? Some areas of the screen look pixelated.

The Short answer:

Use a better, more capable drone with a bigger sensor.

The Longer answer.

The sensor size is too small on the flip, like with most consumer level drones the camera sensor has a fixed aperture. So in real low light the camera has to crank up its ISO to compensate.

You could use pro mode on the camera settings to play with the ISO and shutter speed but you’re limited due to the fixed aperture of f/1.7.

You can also attemp to clean up the image in post processing a lot of software now comes with AI denoise and they tend to work very well.

Agree apart from the f1.7 limitation, this is more of a problem in bright light. 1.7 is reasonably fast, to put it in context a 28 mm f2.8 lens for a dslr would set you back around £150, a 1.8 £500+, a 1.4. £1000+.

The fastest lenses in my collection are f1.8 (can’t afford faster.) for lenses between 10mm -85 mm. Longer lenses your looking at a max aperture of maybe f2.8 say for a 300 mm lens, for which you’d need a mortgage.

This also relates to your other recent topics @isaacthere where you question the video quality of the Flip.

To add to the above comparisons from Deano and Phil, the DJI 18mm f2.8 lens retails at £1,200+

Granted, that’s at the higher quality end of the lens scale but for perspective that price is just for the lens. No camera, no drone, no nothing, just the lens.

I think you might be expecting too much from the DJI Flip in terms of camera quality.

The Flip is great fun though, try not to worry too much about the camera quality and focus on enjoying your flights

The limitation I’m referring to is it’s fixed at f/1.7 and cannot be changed. Not that the f/1.7 IS the limitation.

means you haven’t got full control over your exposure triangle.

Yeah, that’s why I like my M2Pro, variable aperture & and decent size sensor. Could be a bit more sensitive though.:smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

But it’s a sweet wrapper lens on the drones of this size and price
