St Hubert's. Idsworth - Added to Historic Buildings in South East

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene - Location # 612

Land owner permission requirements unknown.

Park in the rough layby at the bottom of the path leading to the church, be careful not to obstruct the gate. It was only when I planned this flight that I learnt the name of the Saxon church, I've always known it as "The Little Church on the Prairie". It is 30 years short of a thousand years old and is fairly plain inside although it once would have had paintings on all four walls - there is a fragment of a preserved painting on the north wall. The church is still an active place of worship.A footpath runs alongside and it seems to be popular with walkers. The main London to Portsmouth railway line runs along the valley floor, a good place to see 8 and 12 coach trains every half hour or so, interspersed with local services

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 10/01/2020. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location.

I want to fly here @macspite, but there are no parking or take off and landing markers. Would you be able to add some to the map please?

You can add them directly to the map by clicking here.

Thanks

It was five years ago that I flew here.

In those far off days we never had such fancy new fangled things like TOAL markers like you young 'uns but had to make do with reading what the person who had posted to Drone Scene had written: “Park in the rough layby at the bottom of the path leading to the church,”

I have put a parking marker over “the rough layby at the bottom of the path leading to the church”

If you rotate the 360 pano at the top of this thread you will see a blue and a white car, parked in the layby.

And Toal is anywhere that you feel comfortable that is neither a crop or knee-deep in mud. I recall onpacking my flight case in the church porch and taking off from the north side of the little enclosure around the church.

Hi @macspite That looks like it must have been some sort of systems generated message about adding certain markers, after I had clicked it as a location that I was planning to fly at. It wasn’t a message that I myself drafted or even knew had been sent. I’m guessing therefore (as not at all very familiar with things on here yet) that maybe that’s something that the system automatically generates and posts in those circumstances.

@GerryA you can turn them off by unticking this box

That explains it! Thanks for letting me know - I wasn’t aware it was a switchable system generated message.

Drone Scene has a whole raft of new features and is regularly updated (thanks @PingSpike and the team!) and that particular feature had slipped past me although it would have been mentioned in the Drone Scene update thread.

I just thought that people were being excessively lazy and demanding markers because they couldn’t be arsed to read the information given.

St Huberts or “The Little Church on the Prairie” as my old shooting chums called it is worth a visit and a look inside once you have flown it. It’s also worthwhile using Drone Scene and Google Earth / Street View to explore the area around, there are several interesting places nearby.

I see, thanks that’s really useful to know. Had previously thought that tick box had possibly simply let the individual person know that I was planning to fly at a particular location, so had generally sought to untick them on a few I’d favourited for a weekend trip just gone…Must have left that one still ticked by default by the system. Hadnt realised before this that the relevant system message also made reference to various potential markers at a location.

We’ve made some changes this week.

It won’t do that anymore

Sorry @macspite @GerryA and anyone else who was confused / annoyed / hassled by that “feature” :see_no_evil:
