Hi Just thought i would like to tell people that my dog stan is becoming a blood donor for dogs. Hopefully if everything goes smoothly he might help to save dogs lifes, and maybe give a more positive look on his breed, american bulldog.
I have not told him yet that he is doing it, but once he knows he will gets lots of hugs and dog biscuits he should be fine.
That dog is a beauty, well done for helping other dogs, unfortunately mine was one of the unlucky ones that a bad tumour took him away from me when he was only 2 and a half
I had a doberman he passed when he was 2 1/2, they said he had internal bleeding but not enough to warrant him to be kept in, he passed during the night, still not over him. Stan went to donate blood today he was ok to give blood, and got nervous and attempted to hide behind me, so it has been put on hold till middle march, but i am sure he will get there, they did take his blood and things are fine, still so proud of him,
Well done Stan - didn’t even know animals could donate to blood-banks. Bit miffed (for myself) as recently diagnosed with Angina, now on meds (no problems so far) - but means that my blood-donation days are now over (got up to 84, anyway, minor brag ).
Hi Stan has negative blood. He donated a full human pint which took 7mins 19 seconds. As long as the dog is between 1 and 8 years old, never been abroad, and is healthy and above 25kg they should be able to do it. It’s amazing. Myself can’t give blood either due to health, but at least you have and a life saver.
Just thought i would share a pic of Stan and his badge and lead that he got for donating blood 5 times. Today was his 5th time, which he donated at the Dick Vet, just out side Edinburgh
Do they still give humans a gold heart when you give 8pints? Wore mine on my sleeve, of course… After the 8th, I felt decidedly woozy and the nurse made a massive fuss of me, which was nice but I took that as a warning and stopped donating.
@paulburgh That’s brilliant!!! Till I read your post, I didn’t even know it was a thing. If I had, I’d have had my boy registered as a donor as soon as he was old enough. Sadly I think he’s missed the boat now due to age and having had a cancerous lump removed earlier this year.
my brother has a springer, she is about 12years, she has had a couple of lumps removed, Even just spreading the word and letting others know, is still helping to save dog lifes, i know that in rare situations dogs blood can be used in cats. I like the expression on darwins face, hope the got a treat for the photo, take care
No treat after that I’m afraid. He was actually getting a telling off as he’d wandered off from my office, to be found sprawled out in the sun in the middle of the bosses office
