Stupid question about no fly zones limits above HMP

I meant March prison. Should have looked at a map before writing . . .

Iā€™ve not been able to find any legal prohibition specifically on overflying prisons with drones. There are several such regulations that apply only to helicopters.

The 164ft figure quoted is curious, and it is intended to be 50m clearance.

This page from Altitude Angel explains the basis of the 164ft ā€œno-droneā€ zones above prisons included in their data:

Youā€™ll note that it is just the 50m clearance to buildings contained in the old regulations. So despite what a few people have said above, there appear to be no NFZs specific to prisons that affect drones, and the data provided by AA seems not to be a formal NFZ of any kind.

So:

  • you can overfly a prison entirely legally with a Mini or Mini 2 (from the pure CAA airspace point-of-view)
  • you probably shouldnā€™t overfly at any height with any other drone (50m horizontal clearance likely to be required in Open Category A2)
  • The Altitude Angel data is out-of-date and should really be updated
  • I still wouldnā€™t go anywhere near the place with a drone of mine!

Happy to lend you the Wifeā€™s Mini if I can hide in the bushes with my Telephoto!

All the above has concentrated on the legal aspect of this ā€¦ since thatā€™s what we all really care about.

However, on the DJI GEO Zones layer the zone has no stated upper limit stated.

So - whether you could fly a DJI drone over the zone would depend on how the DJI GEO Zone software in the drone interprets them.

Let us all know when you give it a go ā€¦

Would have thought it would have been a red zone but its not.

Why when you can fly over a prison

I thought you canā€™t fly over prisons ? At least thatā€™s what I thought,
Anyway itā€™s a hospital

Edit : Prisons are considered restricted airspace, and flying a drone over them without permission is illegal . If you are caught doing so, you could face serious consequences, including fines and even jail time.

So google says

Prison hospital

I know mate, it was a light hearted jest

Ok, you learn something new everyday, however never have fancied flying over a prison thatā€™s occupied,
My local prison is disused so it has no restrictions on it from what I can see, however they was using it for filming parts of the bbc series for killing eve, maybe there might have been a temporary restriction when they was filming, just a guess.
