Sunrise - Swadlincote Derbyshire - Tall Chimney / Ski Centre

I have posted some photos in the past of this location but this also includes the Ski Centre and I have added some other photos (non Pano )

Before becoming a pub, the site of the Tall Chimney was part of a major local pottery and pipe-manufacturing facility known over the years as Wragg’s Pipeworks and later Hepworths Pipeworks

History of the Structure

  • Origins: The wider factory site actually began as a firebrick works back in 1790. Under James Woodward in the 1840s, it transitioned into a highly successful sewage pipe and drainage factory, exporting sanitary ware worldwide. [1, 2]
  • The Chimney: The iconic 164-foot (50-metre) brick chimney was built in 1910 to service the expanding kilns when the site was operated by Thomas Wragg & Sons (Wragg’s Pipeworks). [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Later Years: The works were taken over, rebuilt, and modernised by Hepworth Building Products in 1978. [1, 2]

When the industrial works eventually closed, the historic chimney faced demolition in the 1980s. However, an intense local petition saved it, resulting in the structure receiving Grade II listed status.

Lovely photos Peter. Was the mist a bonus or intended?

I want to get some misty photos one day, but I guess it means getting up early.

And were these taken with an Air 3S?

Hi Ian,

I was hopping for the fog to be around the carpark of the retail park but it’s rare that fog will form in a location like that so it was all over the fields really. But yeah I was hopping for fog but it was in the wrong place haha

So the photos are all on the Air 3s but the Pano’s only one of them is on the 3s the rest are on the Avata 360 - I did take some video with both too - I was able to use a battery up on both drones and was flying for around an hour or so too - got there before 7 for the sunrise and left just after 8 to go and have b’fast at the local Mc’ds haha

A good mornings flying there then. Great that the Avata had some air time :+1:

Now I’m going to have to look for your car or bike in the panos - so no spoilers

HAHA should be quite easy - though truth be told some of the photos I posted on Facebook to my profile I edited out some of the vehicles haha - not that easy to do in a pano

Happy Hunting

Really? No luck with my first pass.
I’ll have a better look - or were you in the other car?

haha two of them pano’s you can just make it out right away with out moving anything maybe just zoom in haha

So here is a hint - I have no put the flight location on Drone Scene for a simple reason - TOAL was on private land but at like 7am on a Sunday not even the cleaning guy emptying the bins was that fussed about me haha

Got you. Easily missed by parking in the middle!

The bin guy probably couldn’t be bothered to go all the way over to you

Or you hadn’t fired up the A360 yet - early morning alarm for Swad.

The 360 was the second bird up and yeah man that thing is LOUD ! when you compare it against the Air 3s she is a noisy one for sure haha but no one bothered me at all.

Superb images, especially the pano’s @LE60LAD

Would you add this location to DroneScene please, we’ve (@DodgerFPV and myself) have been looking for tall buildings to dive the whoops around, and this one is not too far from us, we’re in Nottinghamshire.

Thanks :+1:t2:

Hi Mate - yeah sure I will add it - been a bit hesitant to do so as the chimney is surrounded by private land and the only public TOAL location is quite small and in a location I would not be too happy to fly from - having said that twice I have just taken off from the retail parks parking but early morning or late on a Sunday when its largely empty and not been bothered

So will put the details on there.

Thank you, really appreciated. :clap:t2::+1:t2:
