Sunset at New Brighton Lighthouse

Took my drone down to New Brighton for the sunset on Sunday 11th May. Made this video from the flights taken.

It also reminded me I need to get some ND filters for the drone for when I’m filming at this time of day.

Great stuff, Simon. Was that Sospan at 2.30 in? Think I could pick out Blackpool Tower in some shots on my 38" monitor…

Yes, on a clear day you can see Blackpool Tower. I’ve often tried to stand down by Leasowe Bay to try and get the tower but my telescopic lens on my camera just isn’t quite powerful enough.

Apparently, you can see The Merrick from the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), 184km away, and this is the longest possible line of sight view in the UK. The Merrick is an 843m peak in Galloway, Southern Scotland, the highest in that region and the summit of a massif called The Range Of The Awful Hand (no, really, and worth knowing about for that reason alone), but, despite that, it is not especially well-known. The view is through a small col on the Isle of Man!

There cannot be many, if any, people who have ever actually seen this. The air would have to be phenomenally clear and free from atmospheric distortions caused by different temperatures, and distiguishing a tiny section of skyline through the col on the Isle of Man would only add to the difficulty. Apparently it has been proved with a laser, though.

Love nuggets of information like that! Like you say, would need to be perfect conditions.

I know that from Hoylake beach on a good day you can see the welsh mountains (which isn’t actually too far away as the crow flies). I’m currently trying to ‘sweet-talk’ my way onto the roof of my place of work to launch my drone as it would allow me a little extra height to get a great shot off across Liverpool, Mersey and Wirral off towards Wales. Get a great view from my office window on the 9th floor.
