The second time I used my Avata 2 as part of the film process. Loved this drone!!
Sutton Scarsdale Hall stands on a hilltop near Chesterfield in Derbyshire — a dramatic ruined mansion with a story of ambition, wealth, imprisonment, debt and decline.
Built between 1724 and 1729 for Nicholas Leke, 4th Earl of Scarsdale, and designed by Francis Smith of Warwick, the hall was once one of Derbyshire’s grandest country houses. Its rooms were filled with fine interiors, decorative plasterwork and rich panelling, but after years of changing fortunes the house was stripped, its interiors sold, and the roof removed.
In this video, we look at the history of Sutton Scarsdale Hall, from its medieval origins and Georgian rebuilding to the Arkwright ownership, the sale of its interiors, and the haunting shell that remains today.
Now cared for by English Heritage, Sutton Scarsdale Hall is still a powerful reminder of how even the grandest houses can fall silent — yet still hold on to their story.
Filmed at: Sutton Scarsdale Hall, Derbyshire with DJI Avata 2, Air 3S and Pocket 3.
Featuring: historic background, exterior views, interior reconstructions and the story of one of England’s most atmospheric ruined mansions.
