Headed out yesterday with Mrs Woofy to Sheringham on the north Norfolk coast. I’d planed a stroll along the coastal path and a Mini4 pro flight around the cliffs. Also there is a nice view across the golf course to the poppy line. I thought the steam trains rolling by would be a nice vid. However, the place was swarming with police, ambulances and an air ambulance on the beach. No chance of getting the drone up around there. I did get a short vid of the air ambulance taking off as we walked back to town for refreshments (phone, not drone). Apparently someone had fallen from the cliffs, hope they are ok.
We then headed out of town to a place where the poppy line crosses the road. I’ve often seen people standing there waving to the train and thought it would be a great place for some steam shots. I put the drone up and waited. And waited. 20% beep beep. New battery and up again. Waited. Railway workmen arrive, see the drone and stop for a chat. “waiting for a train, mate? There in’t none. The track has buckled and they’ve stopped all trains”.
The Hants & Isle of Wight air ambulance was, until very recently, based at Thruxton .. some 30 miles from me and not very central to its area of responsibility.
So, a few years ago, when they announced their intention to relocate its base to Southampton .. just 500m from me .. and being a bit of an aviation fan, I was delighted.
Now it’s based so unavoidably close I hear every flight .. which was supposed to be a bit of a pleasure.
But knowing there’s someone in a life threatening situation at the other end of every one of those flights has removed any enjoyment.
Damn it’s busy! Looking at its flights for the day on ADSB Exchange is an awkward mix of amazement/awe/respect/concern.
Sometimes it’s only returning, briefly, to refuel, and off on another life-saving mission. Even that time to refuel may have meant they were too late. Who knows. I know I’d rather not know.
Sometimes, the old saying has genuine merit .. “Ignorance is bliss.”
